What you would seeLo que verías

On a sheet of beige, uneven paper with soft wrinkles and darker edges, a nude woman sits at the center, drawn in fine, delicate graphite lines. Her body is shown in three-quarter view, occupying most of the height of the page, while the background remains empty except for two faint horizontal lines suggesting a seat and the floor. She wears a translucent veil or cloth over her hair, falling behind her shoulders. Her head is raised and turned to her right, her gaze lost upward, with a serious, distant expression. Her legs are crossed and bent: one knee points forward and the other extends to the side, with bare feet resting lightly, one over the other, on the lower line. Her right arm folds across her chest and her hand tightly grips her left shoulder or arm; the left arm, by contrast, stretches out horizontally, ending in an open hand holding a few thin, almost unfinished strokes. Shading is soft, built with very fine hatching that models breasts, belly, thighs, and calves without harsh contrasts. The light seems to come from above and the left. The artist's signature appears in the lower right corner.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face turned upward and away, then follow the extended left arm to the unfinished lines between her fingers. Come back to the right hand clutching her opposite shoulder: that contrast between reaching out and holding herself in changes the pose from a simple life study to a small, unresolved drama.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is *Sketch* (1912), a graphite drawing by American artist Kenyon Cox (1856–1919) , held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and donated by J. D. Cox. Cox belonged to the academic tradition, in which careful study of the human figure was the foundation for larger paintings and decorative compositions. This sheet was probably a preparatory or studio study, although its destination, the identity of the model, and the meaning of the object in her hand are not known. By 1912 such classical draftsmanship coexisted with emerging modern movements, which gives the work a deliberately timeless air.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the object in the outstretched hand was never finished: it is reduced to a few thin, crossed strokes, unlike the carefully modeled knees, torso, and face, as if the action had been left deliberately undecided.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What story could explain the gesture of reaching out with one arm while clutching herself with the other?¿Qué historia podría explicar el gesto de extender un brazo mientras con el otro se aferra a sí misma?
  2. How does our reading of the figure change if the unfinished marks in her hand were a flower, a tool, or a weapon?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de la figura si las marcas sin terminar de su mano fueran una flor, una herramienta o un arma?
  3. What effect does the empty background have: does it isolate the woman, protect her, or leave her exposed?¿Qué efecto produce el fondo vacío: aísla a la mujer, la protege o la deja expuesta?

I pause on the beige paper with its darkened edges and soft wrinkles, which speak of time and studio use. The graphite is applied with fine lines and delicate hatching that models the skin without smudging, leaving lots of empty air around the figure. I am intrigued by the contrast between the barely suggested veil on her head and the more fully worked body, and those unfinished strokes in the left hand that the artist left unresolved. Down on the right the signature anchors the sheet with delicacy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see her as if she were observing an inner sky. She sits in the center of the empty sheet, head lifted and gaze lost upward and to her right, like someone searching for an invisible constellation. The light modeling her comes from above and to the left, just like an oblique sun casting soft shadows on breasts and thighs. With one hand she hugs her own shoulder and with the other outstretched she holds some unfinished strokes, as if trying to reach something that does not yet have form.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She looks like she is thinking about something very serious while playing at being a statue. She is sitting without clothes, with a little veil on her head, legs crossed and one foot resting lightly on the other. One arm hugs herself tight and the other stretches out as if she wants to show me something she did not finish drawing. She looks up like when you wait for someone to speak to you. I like that the background is empty and you only see two faint lines where she sits.
