What you would seeLo que verías

The work is a nearly square textile fragment, mounted on a pale support and photographed from the front, with slightly irregular, worn edges. Its surface is organized in a three-by-three grid: nine oval medallions, outlined in dark wine red, contain the same half-length figure. Each Christ has a halo, a tall crown or headdress, dark hair and beard, a pale face with large eyes and a serious expression, and both hands raised in blessing. He wears a broad tunic or vestment with vertical bands, white crosses, pale blue circles, and golden motifs; beside his head are the abbreviations IC and XC. Between the medallions stand large crosses in the same wine tone, with flared ends, together with small repeated letters in blue and gold. The palette is restrained: a matte golden beige ground, wine red, cream, black, dusty blue, and muted metallic glints. The light is even, without strong shadows, and reveals the fine, slightly lustrous woven texture, small losses, dark stains at lower right, and the grain of the neutral mounting fabric.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the whole grid and at how a single sacred figure becomes a repeating pattern. Then move closer to one roundel and read the hands, the garments, and the letters IC XC. Finally, notice the crosses in the spaces between roundels: they link the figures and turn the fragment into a continuous fabric.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is an Ottoman lampas textile woven in Bursa, Turkey, between 1550 and 1650, by an unknown maker, in silk and gilt-metal thread. Ottoman workshops produced luxury silks with Christian images for markets in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and Muscovy, regions without their own silk industries. Used as church vestments, these fabrics displayed the power and wealth of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The abbreviated inscription IC XC means “Jesus Christ.” The exact original garment, its wearer, and its place of use are not known.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I focus on the material before the image. This is a silk lampas with gilt metal thread woven in Bursa between 1550 and 1650, and you can see it in the soft shine and fine weave that the even light reveals. The irregular edges, small losses, and dark stains at the lower right tell of use and age. The three by three grid and the wine-red crosses organize the design for the loom, and the oval medallions frame the repeated figure.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this silk as a small, ordered sky. Nine identical medallions form a three by three constellation on a golden beige ground, like stars aligned with precision. Each haloed Christ is a sun repeating its blessing gesture, and the large wine-red crosses between them are cardinal points marking space. The letters IC and XC at the sides work like coordinates. I love that an Ottoman workshop wove this sacred map for distant churches.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are nine little Jesuses all the same! I counted them three times: three on top, three in the middle and three at the bottom. They all have a shiny little crown, a serious face and raised hands waving hello. I like finding the wine-red crosses between them and the little letters IC and XC by his head. The background is cookie-colored with light blue and gold. It looks a bit old and stained, but it seems soft and shiny like a king's cape.

  1. #1

If you carefully count the ovals with the half-length figure, how many are there in total in the grid?

    HintPista

Look at the grid: there are three rows with three in each.

  2. #2

On either side of each figure's head you can read two abbreviations repeated in every medallion, what are they?

    HintPista

They are two pairs of letters, one on the left and one on the right, meaning Jesus Christ.

  3. #3

Between the oval medallions there are large wine-red crosses, what shape do their ends have?

    HintPista

Notice they do not end in a point, but flare out and become wider.
