What you would seeLo que verías

A single long sword stands vertically at the center of the image, point down and pommel up, against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top and glows almost white behind the blade's middle. The weapon takes up nearly the full height of the frame and is perfectly symmetrical along its central axis. At the top is a flat, silver pommel shaped like an inverted crutch or anchor, pierced by a round dark hole. Below it, the long grip is black, bound in leather and wire, with a swollen, ribbed bulge in the middle that divides it for two hands; tiny red accents appear where the grip meets the metal fittings. The horizontal crossguard is ornate and slightly rough in texture, its arms ending in down-curved, fish-like hooks, with small knobs and points along its length. Just beneath it, two short curved hooks flare from the blade like a second, smaller guard. The upper blade, the ricasso, looks matte and bears faint etched marks. From there the long, straight blade narrows gradually to a sharp point, with a central groove running down its bright, weathered steel, streaked with gray, greenish, and dark patina.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the top and move slowly downward: first the pierced pommel, then the hand-and-a-half grip, the guard, and finally the long point. Notice that the most telling information is not on the edge, but near the hilt, where the monogram, date, and number are etched. Look at the guard's down-curved ends and small protrusions and consider how much work went into a form that was both defensive and emblematic.

ContextContexto

This is a two-handed sword dated 1574, made in Brunswick, Germany, and associated with the State Guard of Duke Julius of Brunswick-Lüneburg. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it belonged to a large series recognizable by its fish-shaped crossguard and pierced, crutch-shaped pommel. Each sword in the group was dated and numbered; this example bears Duke Julius's crowned monogram, the year 1574, and the number N 59, etched on the ricasso, the unsharpened section of blade just below the hilt. Its maker is unknown. It is made of steel, with a leather- and wire-bound grip. Whether this particular sword saw combat or served mainly as guard equipment is not stated.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look at the contrast of materials and their state of preservation. The steel blade shows gray, greenish and dark streaks, with natural wear and a muted shine that speaks of almost five hundred years. I am drawn to the long black leather and wire grip, divided by a ridged bulge for two hands and small red touches at the joints. The rough guard with fish-shaped hooks and the pierced silvery pommel are key features of the Brunswick-Lüneburg series dated 1574.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This vertical sword looks like a cosmic measuring instrument. The silvery pommel at the top, with its dark circular opening, reminds me of a portal or an eclipse, a window to the unknown. The straight blade is like a meridian dividing the gray background that fades from dark to light, like a sky at dawn. I imagine the guard with curved hooks as tiny moons. We know it bears the engraved year 1574 and the number N 59, as if it were catalogued among stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sword is gigantic, almost as tall as a door! It is standing on its head with the tip pointing down. On top it has a little silvery metal hat with a round hole like a donut. Its black handle is super long, to hold with both hands, and it has a little ball in the middle. Further down there are metal whiskers shaped like angry little fish. The blade is shiny and super long, with a line down the center, and the gray background makes it look like a superheroine.
