What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is shown vertically at the center of a photographic background in graduated gray, almost black at the top and lighter behind the blade. It is a single long sword, photographed in full, with the tip pointing down and the hilt at the top. The blade dominates the composition: narrow, very elongated, and nearly straight for most of its length, curving gently only toward the lower third and ending in a rounded point. Its steel looks aged, matte, and mottled, covered with small pits and dark speckles that give it a rough, almost stony texture. A long central groove runs parallel to the back and fades near the tip. Above, the guard is small but ornate, shaped like a pierced shell or flower with rounded edges. A thin knuckle-bow rises in an arc on the right side, while a short quillon curls into a spiral on the left. The grip is short, dark reddish-brown wood, vertically fluted, smooth and polished, topped by a small metallic pommel cap with a tiny knob. The lighting is soft and diffuse, with gentle glints on the metal and no hard shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the blade's long line from tip to guard and notice how little it curves until the end. Then move up to the small shell below the grip: that ornament changes the object from a mere tool into a piece meant to be displayed. Finally, look again at the pitted steel; its wear stands in contrast to the carefully preserved hilt.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a hunting sword made around 1700 in the Netherlands, by an unknown maker, in steel, wood, and brass. It belongs to the Arms and Armor category and was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance. In early modern Europe, hunting swords were short, sturdy blades carried during the hunt, used to dispatch wounded game and also as visible signs of rank. The individual owner, its exact place of manufacture, and how it was used are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: from a distance the blade looks almost stone-like because of its dense pitting, but it is corroded and worn steel, not a mineral surface.

  1. How does the contrast between the worn blade and the ornate hilt change your idea of this object's value in its own time?¿Cómo cambia la idea del valor de este objeto en su época el contraste entre la hoja desgastada y la empuñadura ornamentada?
  2. Can a weapon designed for hunting also be read as jewelry or an emblem of social status?
  3. What might the pitting on the steel tell us about the centuries that have passed since it was made?¿Qué pueden contar las picaduras del acero sobre los siglos que pasaron desde que se fabricó?

If you look through my eyes, the first thing I see is time settled on the steel. The blade no longer shines, it is matte and mottled, with tiny pits and dark stains that speak of corrosion and centuries of uneven care. I linger on the shell-shaped pierced guard and the slender knuckle bow, both in brass, as well as the short handle of dark reddish brown wood with vertical grooves. It is a hunting sword, sober and elegant, made to dispatch and to display status.

I see it like an elongated constellation standing vertical. The blade is very long and almost straight, curving gently only near the rounded tip, and the central fuller looks like the trail of a comet. The aged steel and the brass of the guard shine very faintly, like dim stars against that gradient gray background that goes from almost black at the top to lighter below. The hilt sits at the summit, crowning everything, and the spiral quillon on the left reminds me of a small perfect orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an explorer sword from a storybook! It is super long and skinny, with a round tip instead of a pointy one, and in the middle it has a long little line like a secret road. At the top it has a tiny metal shell with little holes and a small arch to protect your fingers, plus a curly spiral on the other side. The handle is short, made of brown wood with little ridges so it does not slip. I like that it looks old and spotty, as if it had lived many adventures in the forest.
