What you would seeLo que verías
The object lies alone and perfectly horizontal across the center of the image, against a plain, very light gray background with no other elements or scale reference. On the left is the flat, blunt end of the shaft; on the right, the metal point aims outward, giving the composition a quiet sense of direction and threat. Most of the length is a long, straight, cylindrical wooden shaft in dark brown and grayish tones, weathered and matte. A long, irregular crack runs lengthwise through its middle section, opening slightly and revealing a paler interior. Fine grain, small dents, worn edges, and darker stains suggest great age and dry, brittle wood. Near the right end, a short dark metal collar or ferrule wraps the shaft and marks the transition to the head. The steel tip is short, flattened, and roughly diamond- or leaf-shaped, narrowing to a point; its surface looks rough, dark, and lightly pitted. The lighting is even and diffuse, as in museum photography, with a very soft, thin shadow beneath the shaft that barely lifts it from the background. The overall impression is of something simple, elongated, and fragile, yet designed to pierce.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the shaft from the flat butt on the left toward the tip on the right, and notice how the eye speeds up as the materials change. Pause at the long crack in the wood: it turns a weapon built for impact into a fragile survival. Then look at the metal collar, the joint where the force of the shot and the force of the strike would have met.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a crossbow bolt made in Germany in the 1500s–1600s by an unknown maker, using wood, leather, and steel. It belongs to the Arms and Armor category and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance. Crossbows were used in Europe for both warfare and hunting, and their projectiles were usually shorter and sturdier than ordinary arrows. Leather is listed among the materials, although no clear leather element can be seen in this photograph, probably because it has been lost or is barely preserved. Its specific owner, use, and whether it was ever shot are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Crossbow projectiles are often called bolts or quarrels, and unlike longbow arrows, many had no large feather fletching because the crossbow's groove helped guide them.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I first look at the dark brown and grayish wood, dry and brittle, with that long crack that opens to reveal a paler interior, the fine grain and the age stains. I worry about the fragility of the shaft and the dark ferrule that joins the wood to the short steel point shaped like a diamond, rough and pitted. Against the light gray museum background it looks stable, but every dent tells its material history and calls for very careful handling.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
To me this crossbow bolt recalls a coordinate in the sky, a perfect horizontal line crossing the pale gray background like a meridian. The wooden shaft is the trajectory and the diamond-shaped steel tip is the arrow pointing in one direction, to the right, silent and determined. I imagine its straight flight like a brief comet. That pale crack in the middle looks like a crater seen up close, an accident that interrupts the ideal trajectory and reminds us of time.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant dangerous pencil! I see it lying alone in the middle of the photo, all dark brown, very old and scratched with a big crack in its belly where the inside looks lighter. On one side it has a flat tail and on the other a dark metal tip shaped like a little diamond that looks very sharp. I imagine if you shoot it it goes zoom and sticks. It scares me a little but also makes me curious because it looks fragile and brave at the same time.
