What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular textile banner, nearly square and slightly taller than wide, is shown frontally, hung and spread out against a plain, very pale gray background. It fills almost the entire image, with narrow margins that allow its full outline to be seen. The surface is crimson silk brocade: over the deep red, in a only slightly darker tone, a dense pattern of large flowers, curling leaves, and interlaced vegetal forms repeats, becoming visible as light grazes the weave. A vertical seam runs down the center, and other faint lines divide the cloth into panels. At the center is a small embroidered coat of arms in relief, small in relation to the whole. It is crowned and framed by an oval, irregular, vegetal wreath embroidered with dark metallic threads now greenish and dull; inside, the heraldic details are hard to make out. The sides and lower edge carry a gold trim and short, dark-brown fringe. At the bottom, six rectangular tabs separated by deep slits form a scalloped finish; from each tip hangs a dark tassel with beads and untidy strands. Horizontal creases, frayed areas, small holes, pale tears, and wear are visible, especially along the edges and in the upper half.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the embroidered coat of arms at the center, then step back to notice how small it is against the vast crimson field. Next, follow the light across the brocade: the floral pattern appears and disappears depending on the angle. Finally, look down at the six tabs and tassels and up at the small tears, which shift the reading from ceremonial splendor to fragile, used object.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is an 18th-century Spanish banner by an unknown maker, made of crimson silk brocade with applied embroidery, a scalloped border, fringe, and tassels. It was gifted by Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance and is classified under the Department of Medieval Art, even though its date is later. The source does not identify which institution, family, or place the central coat of arms represented, nor the ceremonies in which it was used. It probably served to be displayed or carried in solemn civic or religious contexts, where the color, sheen of silk, and heraldry signaled belonging and prestige, but that is a general inference, not documented fact for this piece.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual observation: the most informative element, the coat of arms, occupies only a tiny fraction of the banner, while the tone-on-tone brocade — almost invisible at first glance — covers nearly the entire surface.

If I get close, the first thing I see is the work in the crimson silk and how light reveals the brocade of interlaced flowers and scrolling leaves. I notice the central vertical seam and the joined panels, the horizontal creases from being stored folded, and the honest wear of time: fraying, small holes and pale tears, especially at the top and edges. I pause at the contrast between the shiny background and the small, opaque embroidered shield, with its vegetal wreath and metallic threads now greenish and dull, plus the fringes and six tassels that need careful care.

I look at this banner as if it were a sky. The crimson background is a reddish night, dense, covered with vegetal constellations that only appear when light grazes it at an angle, like stars flickering on and off. At the center, the small embroidered shield is a crowned planet, surrounded by its irregular vegetal ring, now opaque and greenish. Below, the six tongues with tassels hang like probes. It reminds me that we do not always shine the same: the brocade still reflects, the metallic embroidery no longer does.

This banner looks to me like a giant king's cape, strawberry-red and shiny, with hidden flowers you only see if you get very close. In the middle it has a tiny little shield with a crown, like an important button, surrounded by little embroidered branches that now look dark and not shiny. It has fringe around it and at the bottom six separate little flaps, each with its fuzzy tassel hanging down. It looks quite old, with wrinkles, little holes and tiny tears, as if it was used a lot in parties and parades.
