What you would seeLo que verías
A single ceramic bowl occupies the center of the photograph, shown in profile against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top. The vessel is hemispherical, with a wide, open mouth, thin walls, a gently rounded base, and one small horizontal loop handle projecting to the right. Its exterior is covered in a matte, off-white slip, worn and stained with beige, light brown, and faint gray patches. Dark brown, almost black, painting decorates the surface: just below the rim runs a wide horizontal band filled with tiny dotted grids, topped by a row of even smaller dots along the edge. From that band, broad vertical stripes descend and curve inward as they follow the belly of the bowl toward the bottom. Some stripes are solid, others contain crosshatching, lattices, or fine net-like patterns, and a few split into narrow prongs before ending. The interior, partly visible, is plainer and pale, with small brown spots near the rim. Soft light from the upper left creates gentle highlights on the slip and casts a diffuse shadow beneath the bowl, including a clear loop-shaped shadow from the handle. The texture looks dry, slightly rough, and aged, with pitting, discoloration, and wear that make the geometric decoration feel handmade rather than mechanical.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the rhythm of the vertical bands and follow them as they curve and narrow toward the base. Then look closely at the rim, where rows of tiny dots reveal the painter's hand. Finally, notice the stains and worn areas: they change the piece from a perfect design into an object that has survived for more than three thousand years.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this unknown maker's bowl comes from Cyprus, dates to about 1450–1200 BCE, in the Late Cypriot II period, and belongs to the White Slip ware tradition. It is now in the Department of Greek and Roman Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust. White Slip pottery is characteristic of Late Bronze Age Cyprus and is recognized by its pale coating and dark painted decoration. Bowls of this shape were probably used for drinking or serving food, although the exact use and findspot of this example are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Seen in profile, the bowl's shadow repeats the shape of its handle: on the surface at lower right, the light draws a second, immaterial handle made only of darkness.

I focus on the surface of this Cypriot bowl from around 1450–1200 BCE. I see the matte white slip, heavily worn, with beige and grayish stains that show its age. The very dark brown, almost black paint was applied by hand below the rim: a horizontal band with a tiny dotted grid and vertical bands curving down the belly. Some are plain, others with lozenges and nets. I notice how the light slip is pitted and faded, and how soft light reveals the thin wall and the dry, slightly rough, aged texture.

This bowl feels like a small portable sky to me. It is from Cyprus, from the Late Cypriot II period, and belongs to the white slip ware tradition, with a light ground and dark decoration. That upper band of tiny dots below the rim looks like an orderly constellation, and the vertical bands running down toward the base make me think of meteor showers or hand-drawn meridians. Kept today in Cleveland as an everyday object perhaps for drinking, its serene geometry invites me to imagine someone using it while watching the night sky.

It looks like a giant little cup with no animal drawings, just with a small ear on one side. It is hemispherical with a wide mouth, and outside it is whitish but stained as if it was used a lot. The funniest part is the dotted border below the rim, like a necklace, and from there brown ribbons go down like roads getting narrower. Some have little diamonds and nets. I like to imagine drinking hot chocolate from it and seeing brown speckles inside, while outside the little handle casts its shadow on the ground.
