What you would seeLo que verías
A long, horizontally oriented textile fragment fills most of the frame against a neutral light gray background. The piece is a wool fabric organized into numerous parallel horizontal stripes running the full length, creating a dense, rhythmic composition. In the foreground the wool appears slightly felted and worn, with faint fraying and uneven edges along the top and bottom that emphasize its fragmentary nature. The dominant palette alternates deep madder red, golden ochre, creamy ivory and dark indigo near-black, arranged in repeating bands. Each stripe is filled with a finely brocaded repeat of stylized boteh or paisley motifs, with curling leaves, tendrils and small floral sprigs that create a subtle relief on the twill ground. Narrower, darker bands act as dividers between the wider, more ornate main stripes. Museum lighting is even and diffuse, without strong shadows, revealing tonal shifts and the fine twill weave structure. On close inspection the handmade quality is evident in slight irregularities, soft fading and the layered intricacy that gives the whole surface the richness of a warm, sumptuous tapestry.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal bands from one end to the other to sense the chromatic rhythm. Then focus on a single stripe and trace the repetition of the boteh motif. Notice how the narrow dark dividers structure the whole and make the reds and ochres vibrate.
ContextContexto
According to collection data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a fragment from the back of a coat, made in Kashmir, India, in the 19th century and dated to after 1830, by an unknown maker. The technique is recorded as twill weave, brocaded, in wool, typical of the renowned Kashmiri textile tradition. It is classified as a Textile and was gifted by the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust. No further description is provided by the source, so the original wearer, exact provenance and circumstances of fragmentation are not documented. It likely belonged to a luxurious male garment such as a jama or long coat, a type widely produced in Kashmir for local use and export during this period.

Curious detailDato curioso
Kashmiri shawls and coats of the 19th century were woven on handlooms using such a complex brocaded twill technique that a single shawl could take a team of weavers many months to complete.

I pause at what time has left visible. This fragment from the back of a Kashmir coat, in wool twill with brocading from the 19th century, shows very dense horizontal stripes with the boteh motif. The frayed edges and worn, slightly fuzzy surface tell me about use and later cutting. I notice the carmine, golden ochre, ivory and indigo tones, and the subtle relief of the brocade. After 1830, unknown hands achieved this regularity with small handmade irregularities that we now preserve under even light.

I see this textile as a sky ordered in bands. The parallel horizontal stripes running across the whole piece remind me of orbits or layers of a stratified atmosphere, each with its own boteh motif repeating like constellations. Carmine red, ochre, ivory and near-black indigo alternate with precise rhythm, separated by narrower dark bands. It is a rectangular, elongated fragment, but its dense repetition suggests a universe that continued beyond the frayed edge.

It looks like a striped blanket for a giant. This little piece of a Kashmir coat is long and full of bands going from side to side, with bent little leaves like droplets repeating a lot. It has strong red, like candy, golden, creamy white and very dark blue. The edges are frayed, as if it was cut out. I like to imagine each stripe is a road and the tiny flowers and tendrils are treasures hidden on each road of the coat.
