What you would seeLo que verías

A rigid brisé fan, with no fabric leaf, displayed fully open against a smooth slate-blue background. The fan is centered horizontally, pivot at the bottom and a jagged, spiky upper edge fanning outward. It is made of gilt openwork metal with dense, lace-like filigree in a warm golden tone that catches light along the rims. Each stick ends in a sharp triangular point edged with tiny pearly white sequins or beads, outlining Gothic arch shapes and a scalloped silhouette. A transverse band of small reddish-brown rectangular plaques joins the sticks near the top. Below, black quatrefoil medallions and small golden rosettes alternate over a fine gilt mesh. Toward the lower center, five miniature painted cartouches set within pointed arches depict tiny landscapes with trees, buildings and figures in soft greens, blues and ochres, with a glossy enamel translucency. The two outer guards are broader and more solid, with intricate piercing and pointed tips. Even, diffused lighting highlights the metallic sheen, the enamel color and the sparkle of the spangles without harsh shadows, emphasizing craftsmanship and scale as a handheld luxury object.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the glittering spiked border and follow the dotted white lines inward toward the center. Pause on the tiny landscape paintings framed by pointed arches and on the dark quatrefoil medallions. Notice how the open gilt work acts like metal lace, letting the background show through and changing with the light.

ContextContexto

This is a Gothic Revival brisé fan dated about 1830, probably made in England in the 19th century, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. The recorded medium is gilt metal, enamel, horn, pigment, spangles and ribbon. The maker is unknown and no original owner or specific use context is documented. The Gothic Revival was a widespread 19th-century taste in Europe and North America that revived medieval forms such as pointed arches, tracery and quatrefoils, all visible in the fan's piercing and cartouches. Brisé fans, composed solely of rigid sticks held by a ribbon, were fashionable luxury accessories that functioned as both adornment and portable art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Brisé fans have no textile leaf; they consist only of decorated sticks linked at the top by a ribbon, so all their ornament comes from metalwork, enamel and miniature painting, as exemplified by this Gothic Revival piece.

If you look closely with a magnifier you will understand why this fan still shines after almost two centuries. It is a brisé type, with no fabric, only rigid sticks of openwork gilt metal with geometric and foliate filigree. I love the sequins and pearly dots tracing triangular points and ogival arches along the upper edge. A band of reddish rectangles hinges the whole structure, while below five tiny enamel scenes set inside Gothic arches hold little landscapes. It is both jewel and fashion accessory, and each enamel needs soft even light to keep its translucency.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I do not see just a fashion accessory, I see a small portable constellation. The soft gray-blue background makes the gilt glow like stars at dusk, and those pearly dots along the scalloped edge look like a miniature Milky Way. The black trefoil medallions and golden rosettes remind me of ornamental skies on old maps. Even the five little scenes inside Gothic arches feel like windows onto other worlds. Around 1830, carrying this neo-Gothic sparkle must have felt like holding your own light in your hands.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a princess castle you can open and close. It has little golden spikes on top like a crown and tiny white dots that sparkle like frost. In the middle there is a little red stripe that holds it together, and at the bottom there are five tiny pictures inside little church-shaped frames, with small trees and colorful houses. The outer edges are thicker and end in points. I like to imagine that if you shake it, it sounds like a rain of sequins. It is a fan but with no fabric, just shiny metal.
