The object is centered against a soft gradient background from dark charcoal at the top to light gray below, lit to emphasize its three-dimensional form. It is a large silver nose ring with an open hoop and a wide, heavily ornamented frontal section. The back hoop is smooth, thin and circular, with a muted polished sheen. The front displays a horizontal band composed of four large lozenge-shaped panels with a pale, off-white surface, catching light or preserving traces of light enamel, each framed by tiny spherical granules and four-petaled floral joints. Above and below the lozenges, triangular points and granular details form a zigzag edge. At the junctions where the hoop meets the decorative plate there are thick, textured terminals with braided or granulated surfaces. The silver shows uneven patina, with darkened crevices and worn highlights that suggest age and use. Its scale appears larger than an everyday facial earring, indicating a bridal or festive ornament designed to extend across the cheek.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the plain hoop and the dense, frontal plaque. Then focus on the four central lozenges and the shadows cast by the granulation. Observe the patina and wear of the silver, which speaks of time and the body that once wore it.

This nath makes me think of patient hands. I notice the smooth, polished hoop contrasting with the heavily decorated front plaque, with its four light-colored diamonds framed by tiny granules and little four-petaled flowers. I am struck by the uneven patina, those darkened areas that speak of wear, of rubbing against the cheek and of time passing. There is no maker’s mark, we do not know the workshop, but the granulation technique and the surface wear tell us this was a lived jewel, not just stored away. The soft light on the gray background helps to read every relief.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at it I see a small portable constellation. The silver hoop is like a thin orbit and the front plaque looks like a band of aligned stars, with four diamond-shaped suns and zigzag peaks like rays. I am fascinated that such a large object would cover part of the cheek, like a personal, shiny eclipse. It is silver from the early twentieth century, from India, and although we do not know who wore it, I imagine how it would have caught the light at a celebration or wedding, reflecting like the moon.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a giant nose earring! It looks like a princess hoop but much bigger than a normal one, it almost covers your cheek. It has four little white diamonds that shine and tiny little balls around them like candies. The edges have zigzag little points and it looks silvery with some darker parts because it is old. I imagine if you wear it you must feel tickly and everyone looks at you because it shines so much. It is from India and it is for very special parties.
