silver with carnelian
What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a black-to-gray gradient background, a horizontal belt clasp is shown in frontal view. The metal setting has an aged golden tone with dark patina and surface abrasions suggesting gilt silver. At the core sits a square-cut translucent carnelian in orange-red, surrounded by four oval carnelian cabochons placed at north, south, east and west, forming a cross. Behind them a circular metal ring subtly connects the stones. On the far left extends a hollow rectangular buckle loop, while on the right a short tapered tongue serves as the hook. The five carnelians vary in saturation from deep ruby to pale amber, revealing internal veining, cloudy inclusions and tiny fissures when lit. Each stone is held by a thin, finely serrated bezel. Top lighting highlights the glassy luster of the gems and the hammered, slightly rough texture of the metal, casting soft shadows that give the small object volume and tactile presence, clearly intended to be worn close to the body at the waist.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the overall cross shape, then focus on the central square stone as the anchor of the design. Move to the four surrounding ovals and notice how each red differs in tone and translucency. Look at the circular frame and side hooks to read it as a functional fastening, not just decoration.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a 19th-century clasp, probably Tibetan, made of silver with carnelian. The red stone was believed to protect the wearer from evil. Its quincunx arrangement — a central square with four ovals in the cardinal directions — recalls a mandala layout. It was likely worn at the center of the waist with a belt. The maker is unknown and the precise findspot and personal history are not recorded, with the cultural attribution marked as uncertain. It belongs to the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department as part of the Gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wade.

Curious detailDato curioso
The quincunx on this clasp mirrors a Buddhist mandala in miniature — center and four directions as a diagram of the universe — here transformed into a wearable protective jewel.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the traces of time on this nineteenth century Tibetan brooch. I see gilded silver with dark patina, hammered metal and the thin toothed bezel holding each carnelian. The five reddish orange stones show veins, tiny bubbles and little fractures that speak of their glassy, semi-precious nature. Overhead light reveals the loving wear of an object made to be worn at the waist, close to the body. It is not just ornament, it is lived matter that asks for gentle care and respect for its history.

Looking at this brooch I think of sky maps. Its five carnelians form a quincunx, four ovals in a cross around a central square, like the cardinal points and the center. The record says it recalls a mandala, and I also see a portable constellation, a tiny cosmos to wear at the waist. The red stone was linked to protection, like a guiding star that wards off evil. I like to imagine the wearer carried their own north, south, east and west ordered on a black background, like a symmetrical universe.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a superhero belt. It has five shiny stones the color of watermelon and tangerine juice, one square in the middle and four oval ones around it as if they are playing around it. The little golden metal looks old and scratchy but the stones shine a lot. I imagine it is a magic button that protects you, like a shield on your belly. If you press it maybe it gives you courage. I like it because it is symmetrical, as if someone arranged it very carefully to look pretty and powerful.
