What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire frame, photographed head-on against a smooth background that fades from black at the top to dark gray below. It is a round, domed button, small in real scale though greatly enlarged here, with no object beside it for reference. Its surface is covered in glossy black enamel, crossed by fine gold scrollwork forming spirals, stylized leaves, and wavy lines in relief. Rising from that dark ground are dozens of small round or oval cabochons in turquoise tones — some intense and almost blue, others paler or greener, with faint veining and subtle differences in shine. Each sits in a cylindrical gold setting; some lie close to the surface while others project outward, especially around the edges, giving the button a bristling, three-dimensional quality. Soft light from above creates pinpoint reflections on the metal and the turquoise pieces, and a very faint shadow beneath the button. Small irregularities, signs of wear, and variations in tone suggest handwork. Neither the back nor the fastening mechanism is visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette: a compact dome almost bristling with turquoise dots. Then follow the gold scrolls across the black ground until the pattern of leaves and spirals emerges. Notice how the taller settings around the edge change the piece from flat decoration into a small, tactile sculpture.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this piece is titled Button (5 of 5), its maker is unknown, and it comes from Hungary. Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: several turquoise cabochons are not set into the surface but rise on short gold cylinders, especially around the edges, so the button looks spiky and almost organic when seen up close.

I pause on the domed surface and how the glossy black enamel still holds its light after so much time. The golden scrolls in relief form spirals and stylized leaves and each turquoise cabochon is held by its cylindrical golden mount. I notice slight irregularities, gentle wear and variations in tone in the metal and enamel that speak of handwork between 1811 and 1916. As number 5 of 5 I picture the full set sewn to a garment, and I think about how to protect those spiky projecting settings that give it such a three dimensional texture.

This button looks like a tiny celestial vault in miniature. The black enamel is like a night sky and the turquoise cabochons shine like scattered constellations, some intense blue and others pale greenish. The golden scrolls trace orbits and spirals like star maps. Although the piece is small in scale and here appears highly enlarged, photographed frontally on a dark background, I imagine that wearing five of these domed spheres on clothing would be like carrying a portable firmament from nineteenth century Hungary.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a shiny little cake or a planet with tiny spikes! The button is black with golden swirly drawings like little snails and it has many turquoise beads sticking out like candy dots. Some look very blue and others lighter. I like that it shines a lot because the light hits it from above and makes little stars on the gold. It is small but in the photo it looks giant. If there were five alike I would put them all together so my sweater looks full of treasures.
