What you would seeLo que verías
A small lobed box, shaped like a melon or segmented gourd, shown in three-quarter view against a dark gradient background fading from black to soft grey. Centered in the frame, it rests on four tiny feet barely visible beneath its base. The entire surface gleams with gilding and dense ornament. The domed lid is covered with a raised vine motif: branching stems, lobed leaves and blossoms curl from the rim toward the crown. Some leaves retain pale greenish and pinkish enamel, while buds or small fruits show brown and pearly tones. The ground of the lid is finely stippled, and a band of stylized waves runs just above the rim, suggesting water or cloud scrolls. Around the joint where lid meets body there is a double border of geometric fretwork in relief, interrupted by a thin line of turquoise enamel visible in the crevice. Light catches the polished ridges of each lobe and leaves deep shadows in the furrows, emphasizing the objects sculptural volume. Tiny turquoise dots also appear at the base, hinting at kingfisher feather inlay. The scale suggests a dressing-table object for jewelry or cosmetics, only a few inches high, with a tactile, sumptuous and highly decorative texture.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the melon-like lobed silhouette and how light defines each segment. Then follow the vine across the lid and notice the contrast between smooth gold leaves and the stippled ground. Finally look for the thin turquoise line at the seam between lid and body — that flash of color reveals the feather-inlay technique.

This is a box attributed to China, Qing dynasty (1644–1911), dated to the 1800s, by an unknown maker. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, it is made of silver gilt with kingfisher feather inlay and semi-precious stones and is classified as metalwork in the Chinese Art department. Curious detailDato curioso
The technique of gluing tiny iridescent kingfisher feathers onto gilded metal, known as diancui, produced an intense turquoise-blue that pigments could not match and was highly prized for Qing court jewelry and headdresses, though the feathers can fade if not carefully preserved.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I love this small lobed golden box because every relief tells a technical story. I see gilt silver worked with vines, leaves and flowers climbing over the lid, geometric fret borders at the rim and tiny turquoise dots of kingfisher feather inlay tucked in the grooves. The polished gold shines against shadowed hollows and traces of pale enamel. It is a piece of portable luxury from the nineteenth century that needs soft light and extreme care to preserve its sumptuous texture.

This box reminds me of a small planet seen up close. Its lobed shape like a ribbed melon looks like a world with golden meridians and continents made of vines. The geometric fret bands are like orbits around the equator where lid and body meet. The turquoise sparkles are tiny stars and the dark gradient background makes its glow stand out. Although it is a nineteenth century vanity box for jewels, its symmetry and light make me think of a cosmos in miniature.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a little magic golden pumpkin! It has lots of shiny bumps and vines with little leaves and flowers growing on top like a tiny jungle. Around the middle there is a border with maze-like patterns and turquoise dots that shine like candies. It has tiny feet and wavy lines that look like water. I imagine it keeps secret treasures inside, like rings or pretty little stones, and that when you open it goes cling! like an enchanted chest.
