What you would seeLo que verías

Against a smooth background that fades from near-black at the top to medium gray at the bottom, a complete hanging ensemble appears vertically centered and photographed straight on, with nothing else around it. At the lower center hangs the inro itself: a small, upright, flattened case with straight sides, slightly rounded corners, and a gently curved silhouette. Its lacquered surface is very dark brown, almost black, densely sprinkled with tiny golden flecks like dust or distant stars. Across it run diagonal, delicate branches with clusters of fine golden pine needles, dark leaves or berries descending in strands, and a few small, pale cream blossoms that stand out in the dimness. A glossy sheen suggests polished lacquer. From the top of the case, a braided lavender-purple cord rises in a V to a small oval gold bead, the ojime, engraved with a fine vegetal pattern, and continues upward as a double cord with small knots. At the very top sits the netsuke, a compact carving in cream, honey, and brown tones, with swirling, interwoven forms in which a small figure or creature is partly suggested and partly hidden. Below the inro, the same purple cord ends in a loose decorative knot with a dangling loop.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the whole hanging ensemble, from the netsuke at the top to the knot at the bottom, to understand how it was worn. Then move closer to the inro and follow the diagonal branches until you notice the small pale blossoms against the dense gold. Finally, look at the ojime: that tiny bead is not merely decoration, but the piece that regulates the cord.

ContextContexto

This piece is catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art as an *Inro*, by an unknown maker, dated broadly to 1615–1868, during Japan's Edo period. It is made of lacquer and was a gift from D. Z. Norton. Inro are small, compartmented cases that men hung from the sash, or obi, of a kimono, which had no pockets. They were used to carry small items such as medicines or seals. The cord passes through the case, the ojime bead keeps it closed, and the netsuke at the top acts as a toggle. The exact date, workshop, and original owner are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it looks like a single case, a traditional inro opens into several stacked compartments fitted so precisely inside one another that they share one continuous outer surface and decoration.

I pause on the dark brown surface, almost black, polished to catch the light. That golden dust that looks sprinkled is no accident: it is lacquer with gold specks, built up layer after layer in Japan's Edo period, between 1615 and 1868. The pine branches with ultra-fine needles and pale cream blossoms are not just decoration, they protect. Each dark leaf and each shine speaks of patient hands, of a case made to hang from the obi and hold small things. It remains beautiful and whole.

Sigue hermoso y entero.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a portable night sky. The inro's background is very dark brown, almost black at the top and medium gray below, like dusk turning lighter. On it, the little golden specks are distant stars and the pine branches look like constellations drawn diagonally. The cream blossoms are tiny moons. Even the lavender purple cord and the golden ojime above recall an orbital system, with the honey-colored netsuke as the main planet. A miniature cosmos to carry at the waist.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little magic box hanging from a pretty purple thread. It is dark brown with golden sparkles as if fairy dust was sprinkled on it. It has little branches with golden needles and cream flowers hanging as if they were dancing. On top it has a golden bead like a button and higher up a strange honey-colored charm with a hidden face. Below hangs a little purple knot that sways. I would keep it for my secret treasures, like candies or little notes.
