Two Putti is an oil on canvas by an unknown artist, made in Italy in the 1700s and now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art (Holden Collection). According to the museum, the darkened varnish has altered its original appearance: the background was once greenish blue and is now mossy green, the pink flesh has turned bronze, and the gray horn has become brassy. The museum relates the work to playful putti that Correggio painted in 1519 in sixteen oval ceiling frescoes for the Camera di San Paolo in Parma, commissioned by Abbess Gioanna da Piacenza. It is not known whether this painter worked from sketches made during her lifetime or saw the frescoes after the house reopened to the public.

I am fascinated by how this vertical rectangle works like an intimate telescope. There is no landscape or architecture, just two illuminated bodies floating in a dark void, like close planets. This kid is so cheeky! The one on the right is puffing his cheeks really big to play the horn right into his friend’s ear, and you can tell he is doing it very loudly. The other poor one covers both ears with his hands and closes his eyes as if saying enough, too noisy! I like that they are chubby and shiny and there is nothing around them, just the two of them playing. You can even see the little string of the horn hanging between them, like a prank caught in action.
