What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the reverse of an ancient silver coin photographed from above against a pale background. The coin fills most of the frame, circular but with an uneven, slightly raised rim shaped by striking and centuries of wear. At its center is a low-relief profile of a young woman facing right, rendered in Classical style: straight nose, small parted lips and an almond-shaped eye seen in profile. Her wavy hair is gathered back, bound by a thin fillet or band, with a low chignon at the nape. Encircling the portrait are four stylized dolphins swimming clockwise, their elongated bodies, fins and snouts still legible despite abrasion. Between the dolphins and in front of the face appear small raised Greek letters. The surface has a dark, lead-grey patina with silvery highlights on the highest points where light catches, and deep shadows along the rim grooves and deeper recesses. Fine scratches, nicks and softened edges attest to handling and age. Though only palm-sized in scale, the delicate modeling of the cheek, eyelid and hair gives the tiny portrait a sense of monumentality and calm presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the calm profile at the center and the soft waves of hair held by a thin band. Follow the circle of dolphins around the edge and notice how they frame and animate the portrait. Look closely at the Greek letters before the nose and at the contrast between shiny worn ridges and dark patinated hollows.

ContextContexto

This is the reverse of a silver tetradrachm minted at Syracuse in Sicily, around 430–420 BCE, in the Greek Classical period. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records its engraver is unknown, its technique is silver striking and its department is Greek and Roman Art, Gift of J. H. Wade. The head depicts the nymph Arethousa, patron of the city’s freshwater spring and a hallmark of Syracusan coinage in the 5th century BCE. Such coins exemplify the exceptionally fine die-engraving achieved at Syracuse at this time. No individual circulation history is recorded for this specimen.

Curious detailDato curioso

Syracusan Arethousa tetradrachms surrounded by dolphins are celebrated as masterpieces of Greek numismatics; their design blended civic identity, myth and engraver virtuosity and was widely imitated across the Mediterranean for centuries.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the ring of dolphins alter the reading of Arethousa’s identity and mood?¿Cómo cambia la percepción de Aretusa al estar rodeada de delfines en vez de aparecer sola?
  2. What can the uneven wear and patina of the silver tell us about how this coin was used?¿Qué nos dice el desgaste y el brillo irregular de la plata sobre el uso cotidiano de esta moneda?
  3. How can such a small object convey the power and artistic ambition of an entire city?¿De qué manera un objeto tan pequeño puede transmitir poder y belleza de una ciudad entera?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see what time has done to this silver: a leaden grey patina with bright highlights on the raised areas and deep shadows in the grooves of the relief. The edge is raised and irregular, struck during minting and marked with nicks and scratches from use. The profile of Arethusa keeps its delicacy despite wear, with the diadem and low bun still legible. I am struck by how the four dolphins, though eroded, still trace a perfect circle around the face. It is a conservation approach that respects every trace.

What fascinates me most is that everything revolves around a center, like a small system. The face of the nymph Arethusa is the core and the four dolphins swim in orbit following the edge of the coin, almost like satellites. The piece is silver and fits in the palm of your hand, but photographed from above it looks like a planet with its moons. The Greek letters between the dolphins are like constellations that help you find your way. It is amazing that around 430–420 B.C. in Syracuse they achieved that sense of circular motion in such a tiny relief.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic pirate coin but really really old. In the middle there is a girl in profile with a little ribbon in her hair and a small bun at the back, as if she is looking to one side. Around her four tiny dolphins swim in a circle, as if they are protecting her. It looks grey and silvery, a bit rough with little scratches because it was used a lot so many years ago. I like to imagine it was found at the bottom of the sea near Sicily and that is why it has dolphins. It is tiny but it feels important.
