What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, filling almost the entire irregular circular flan, a young woman’s face appears in relief, shown frontally in a slight three-quarter view, gazing directly at the viewer. She is the nymph Larissa. Her face is oval with full cheeks and a soft chin, lips slightly parted and a straight nose gently worn by time. Her almond-shaped eyes with marked pupils convey serenity. The most striking feature is her abundant curly hair, with thick wavy locks that spread like a crown across the forehead and fall toward the temples, forming well-defined curls that create a strong play of light and shadow. The silver surface looks matte and granular from patina, in greyish tones with silvery highlights on the high relief and dark spots from oxidation and age. The edge of the coin is uneven, with a faint beaded border barely visible at the top. At the bottom a low-relief vegetal or wreath-like element can be discerned. Top lighting emphasizes the volume of the face and the rough texture of the ancient metal, set against a plain light background that isolates the object and highlights its small scale as a portable, precious item.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center of the face and then follow the curls that frame it like a halo; notice how the engraver achieved depth in just a few millimeters of relief. Then look at the wear and dark patina that reveal centuries of circulation and burial. Pay attention to the beaded border and the irregular edge of the flan, traces of the hand-striking process.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the obverse of a silver drachma struck in Thessaly, Greece, around 375 to 320 BCE, by an unknown maker, in the Greek and Roman Art department. It was a gift of J. H. Wade. The figure depicts the nymph Larissa, eponymous heroine of the city of Larissa, capital of Thessaly, whose facing head was a very popular type in local coinage during the 4th century BCE. Such silver coins, struck by hammer, served both as currency and as a civic emblem. No further specific details about this specimen are recorded beyond its general date and cultural attribution.

Curious detailDato curioso

Facing-head drachmas of Larissa like this one were so admired in antiquity that their frontal portrait style and voluminous hair influenced coin issues in other Greek cities and are considered among the finest achievements of Classical late coin-die engraving.

I look at this silver drachm hammer-struck in Thessaly between 375 and 320 B.C. What interests me is the patina: that granular surface in opaque grays with silvery highlights on the high relief and dark spots from oxidation. Wear is more noticeable on the straight nose and on the edges of the irregular flan, where the beaded border on top is barely visible. The three-quarter face still preserves the volume of the cheeks and the deep texture of the curls. Lighting it from above helps read those contrasts without handling the fragile metal.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at the nymph Larissa facing forward, with her hair spread like a crown, I think about how the Greeks used their civic emblems like portable constellations. This oval little face, with serene almond eyes, traveled in pockets and markets in Thessaly around 375 to 320 B.C., identifying its city the way a star identifies a region of the sky. Its light is not bright: it is dull, grayish silver, which reflects little but endures. A small silver sun for finding your way in ancient daily life.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This coin looks like it is staring at me! It is a girl with super curly hair, like she has lots of springs around her head. Her face is roundish and her lips are a little open, as if she is about to say hi. The coin is not shiny, it is gray and scratchy, with dark little spots because it is very very old, from more than two thousand years ago. Its edge is a little crooked and it is tiny, it fits in my hand. I like that it is like a silver treasure.
