What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents both sides of a single ancient gold coin, placed side by side against a pale, matte off-white background. On the left is the obverse, dominated by a female head in profile facing right, Athena. She fills most of the circular flan and wears a Corinthian helmet seen in profile, with a high crest that curls into elaborate scrollwork, a raised ridge over the brow and a plume suggested by wavy lines running back from the crown. Strands of hair escape at the temple and neck, rendered as tight beaded curls and braided locks with deep undercutting that catches shadow. Her features are crisp: a straight nose, a calm mouth, a large almond-shaped eye with incised lid and pupil, and a firm chin. Light glints brightly on the highest points of the gold and pools darker in the recesses, emphasizing the hand-struck irregular edge, slightly off-round with minor nicks and soft wear. On the right is the reverse: a full-length winged female figure, Nike, standing with weight shifted, wings fully spread to either side of her draped body. She wears a long chiton with fine vertical pleats that cling and fall to her feet, and she extends her right arm forward holding a small wreath. Greek letters are arranged vertically in the field beside and below her, slightly worn but legible in relief. The metal is a warm, luminous gold, varying from buttery highlights to deeper honey-brown in shadow, with a thick, slightly rough rim.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the warm glow of the gold and how light sculpts the raised relief, then move from the intimate, detailed profile of Athena to the full standing figure of Nike. Look closely at the small Greek inscription framing Nike and at the uneven edge, a reminder of ancient hand striking.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a gold stater struck between 323 and 317 BCE during the reign of Philip III Arrhidaeus, half-brother and successor of Alexander the Great, at the mint of Abydos in Mysia, in present-day northwestern Turkey. It is catalogued as part of the Coins collection in the Greek and Roman Art department. The obverse bears the helmeted head of Athena and the reverse shows Nike, goddess of victory, with outstretched wings. The die engraver is unknown. Gold staters of this type, introduced under Philip II and continued under Alexander, circulated widely across the Macedonian realm and were probably used for high-value payments and military expenses.

Curious detailDato curioso
This stater design of Athena and Nike remained in use for decades under different Macedonian kings, so its authority depended as much on its consistent, trusted imagery as on its gold weight.

This small gold stater carries a lot of history and shine, right? I look at its thick, irregular edge, a sign of hand striking, and the worn high points where the gold shifts from bright yellow to darker tones from patina. On the obverse I can make out Athena’s Corinthian helmet with its wavy crest and the pearly curls of her hair; on the reverse, the vertical folds of Nike’s chiton. Light reveals each strike of the die and reminds me this coin traveled a great deal before reaching the display case.

Like looking at two golden moons side by side, I see obverse and reverse cut out against a soft matte grayish white background. On the left, Athena’s profile faces right, wearing a high crested helmet with scroll shapes; on the right, Nike stands with broad wings spread and arm extended holding what looks like a wreath. Small Greek letters in relief surround the winged goddess, worn like faint constellations. The metal catches light on high points and darkens in grooves, like a planet with topography.

They look like two coins but they are really one coin seen from both sides! On the left side there is a lady with a fancy helmet like a superhero, with lots of little curls and a wavy crest that shines a lot. On the other side there is a lady with big open wings, as if she is about to fly, wearing a dress with little lines and holding a tiny wreath. The gold looks yellow and sometimes darker, and the edge is not a perfect circle because it was made by hand a very long time ago.
