What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows two small bronze ornaments side by side against a smooth, seamless grey background, each presented in its own half of the image as if in a diptych. Both stand upright, slightly taller than wide, with a pointed, teardrop-like oval outline filled with delicate openwork. The frame is not solid: it curls into vine-like scrolls, pierced holes, and small rounded bumps, giving it a lace-like quality. In the upper part of each piece a heron bends over, its long neck curving down, its beak pointing toward the lower section, one thin leg visible among the scrolls. Its body is covered with fine incised marks suggesting feathers. Below it, near the base, sits a much smaller turtle, seen from above with an oval, patterned shell. The left ornament is a vivid turquoise-green with rough, grainy corrosion and a few small brown spots near the bottom. The right one is darker and more olive, with smoother golden-green areas on the bird's body. Soft, diffuse light casts faint shadows beneath each piece, emphasizing their thinness, fragility, and small scale against the empty ground.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the lacy outline, then look for the two animals stacked vertically. Notice how the heron's curved neck echoes the scrolls around it, and how the turtle below anchors the whole design. Compare the two pieces: their shared motif makes their different patinas stand out.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, these bronze ornaments were made in Korea in the 1100s, during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), by an unknown maker. Metalworking advanced remarkably in this period, and finely designed metal objects served both as everyday accessories and as burial goods commemorating the dead. Traces of fibers found on the backs suggest they were probably once used as brooches to fasten garments. Their exact owner, place of use, and whether this pair comes from clothing or a burial are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising survival: traces of fibers were found on the backs of these ornaments, suggesting the textile they once fastened outlasted nearly nine centuries in contact with the metal, even if only as traces.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What might the pairing of a heron above and a turtle below have meant to the person who wore these ornaments?¿Qué pudo significar para quien los usaba la pareja formada por una garza arriba y una tortuga abajo?
- How does the green corrosion change the way we read a design that was originally metallic bronze?¿Cómo cambia la corrosión verde nuestra lectura de un diseño que originalmente era de bronce metálico?
- What can tiny surviving traces—a fiber on the back—tell us that the visible decoration cannot?¿Qué pueden contarnos unos rastros mínimos, como una fibra en el reverso, que la decoración visible no cuenta?

If you look closely you will see they are not perfect jewels but survivors. The openwork bronze is extremely thin, like lace, with vegetal scrolls and little gaps that let light through. What moves me most is the patina: on the left a rough grainy turquoise green from corrosion, with brownish spots near the base; on the right a darker olive tone smoother with greenish gold glints on the heron. From the twelfth century, tiny and fragile, they still keep fibers on the back from the garment they once fastened as a brooch.

I see them as two portable constellations. Their pointed oval drop shape recalls a closed orbit, and the openwork leaves empty spaces like sky between stars. On top, the long curved neck heron seems to lean to observe, like a living telescope; below, the little turtle seen from above is a small planet with its oval shell. Soft light casts faint shadows and highlights their thinness against the gray background. Made in Goryeo in the twelfth century, they float like two bronze moons.

They are two little sisters! Both have a long beaked heron right on top and a tiny turtle below hidden among curly little plants. They look like lace but made of metal, with lots of little holes to peek through. One is bright turquoise green and scratchy and the other is darker and greenish. I like that the heron is tilted as if it wants to chat with the turtle. They say long ago in Korea they worked as little brooches for clothes and now they are old little treasures.
