What you would seeLo que verías

Photographed from directly above against a plain, light grey background, a string of glass beads forms an almost perfect circle with an empty centre. There are roughly forty-eight beads and no visible clasp; the scale feels small, like a piece of jewellery, although no hand or other reference object is shown. Size and colour change as the eye travels around the ring. The largest, heaviest and most irregular beads are gathered at the bottom: deep cobalt blue, mottled with whitish patches, veins, pits and worn edges that suggest great age. One bead at lower right has a dark, chipped area. Moving up both sides, the beads become shorter and more cylindrical, in navy blue and greenish tones so dark they are nearly black, some of them translucent where the light passes through. At the top they shrink to tiny rounded beads. Two uneven, translucent pink and orange beads on the left break the dominance of blue, together with a turquoise tubular bead, a greenish-white bead and a single vivid green accent at upper right. Soft light casts a short shadow beneath each bead and brings out polished gleams, grainy surfaces and opaque areas, giving the whole string a texture that ranges from smooth to rough.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the largest beads at the bottom and follow the circle clockwise as they gradually become smaller. Then look for the exceptions to the dominant blue: the pink and orange beads on the left, and the single bright green bead near the top. Those small interruptions change a seemingly uniform necklace into a sequence of differences in material, origin and wear.

ContextContexto

"String of Glass Beads," by an unknown maker, is dated to the 400s CE, during Korea's Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE), and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the source, large numbers of bead strings and necklaces have been excavated from tombs of Silla, one of the kingdoms of the period. Glass, produced on a large scale in ancient Rome from the late first century onward, also reached the Korean Peninsula along the Silk Road. However, the cobalt-blue beads in this string were probably made of soda glass produced in Silla territory. Who wore this piece, and from which specific tomb it came, is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that, among dozens of predominantly blue beads, there is only one bead in a bright, almost lime green, placed near the top of the circle.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the variation in size, colour and finish suggest about how these beads were made, obtained or assembled?¿Qué podrían sugerir las diferencias de tamaño, color y acabado sobre la manera en que estas cuentas se fabricaron, se obtuvieron o se ensartaron?
  2. How would our reading of the piece change if we saw it worn on a body rather than arranged in a circle on a neutral ground?¿Cómo cambiaría nuestra lectura de la pieza si la viéramos puesta en un cuerpo, en lugar de dispuesta en círculo sobre un fondo neutro?
  3. What stories about trade, local production and personal adornment can a small object like this tell — and what can it not tell us?¿Qué historias sobre comercio, producción local y adorno personal puede contar un objeto tan pequeño, y cuáles no puede contar?

I focus on how light reveals each surface. At the bottom the large cobalt blue beads show whitish spots, streaks, tiny pits and worn edges from age; one is even chipped. Toward the sides they become cylindrical and so dark they look almost black, and at the top they are tiny and rounded. That shift in size and texture, from smooth and shiny to grainy and opaque, tells me about ancient techniques and wear after centuries underground.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a tiny planetary system photographed from above. About forty-eight beads form an almost perfect circle on a light gray background, like an orbit with an empty center. At the bottom are the blue giants, large and irregular; around them orbit smaller and darker worlds, and at the top the tiniest ones. Among so much blue there are different notes: two pinkish and orange beads, a tubular turquoise one, a greenish white one and a vivid green dot that looks like a shooting star.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a space candy necklace made into a circle. I counted almost forty-eight little beads and it has no clasp, so I do not know how it closes. The ones at the bottom are very strong blue, like old marbles with little white spots and scratches; one looks nibbled. Then they get small and dark, almost black, and at the top they are like tiny sprinkles. I like the intruders: two transparent pinkish ones, one long turquoise bead and a single shiny green one that looks like a little light.
