What you would seeLo que verías

Photographed from directly above against a smooth, light gray background, a necklace forms an almost complete circle in the center of the image. It is made of around forty oval beads of translucent glass in an intense turquoise blue, with deeper teal tones where the material thickens and paler highlights where light passes through it. The beads are not perfectly uniform: some are longer, others rounder, a few sit slightly askew, and one small, narrow bead appears on the lower right. Fine internal bubbles, faint striations, and small dark specks are visible inside several pieces, giving them a watery, handmade quality. At the bottom hangs a flat pendant, wider than it is tall, in the same blue glass. Its upper edge is straight and pierced to join the string, while its lower edge undulates softly, like a fan or a shell. Its surface has gentle reliefs, veining, and wear marks. Soft shadows beneath the beads suggest they rest on a flat surface and give a slight sense of volume. No clasp, person, or scale reference is visible, so the actual size cannot be judged from the photograph alone.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall circle and its almost jewel-like color, then follow the beads one by one and notice that no two are exactly alike. Finish at the pendant at the bottom: its flat, widened shape breaks the rhythm of the ovals and reveals why it is the center of the piece.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this necklace of glass beads with a pendant, by an unknown maker, dates to Korea's Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE) and belongs to the field of Korean art. The source notes that large quantities of bead strings and necklaces have been excavated from Silla tomb sites. Glass, widely produced in ancient Rome from the late first century onward, also reached the Korean Peninsula via the Silk Road. Nevertheless, the blue beads in this necklace are most likely soda glass produced within Silla territory. Its exact place of manufacture, owner, and original context are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: despite its age, the glass keeps a bright, watery transparency, and the tiny bubbles trapped inside some beads can still be seen.

I focus on what the photo reveals about the material: about forty turquoise blue glass beads, not at all uniform, with tiny internal bubbles, fine striations and dark specks that speak of handcrafted work. The flat pendant, wider than tall, with its gently wavy lower edge like a fan, shows faint relief patterns and signs of wear. Everything rests on a light gray background and casts a soft shadow; with no visible clasp or scale, what remains is the trace of time on the glass.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this circle of beads as a constellation on a light gray background. There are about forty oval moons of intense turquoise blue that turns greenish where the glass is thicker and almost transparent where light passes through. The flat, wavy pendant at the bottom looks like a small horizon. It comes from the Three Kingdoms period, linked to Silla, and its glass may have been made there, although that technique traveled from Rome along the Silk Road. A necklace excavated from tombs that still keeps its glow.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a necklace made of sea drops! There are about forty blue marbles, some longer and some chubbier, all forming a circle on the gray surface. They shine a lot and look like they have little water and bubbles inside. Hanging at the bottom is a pendant that looks like a tiny shell or a blue fan. You cannot see the clasp and I cannot tell if it is big or small because there is nothing to compare it to. I imagine someone wore it a very long time ago and it was found buried.
