What you would seeLo que verías

A single long, slender spoon crosses the image diagonally, from the lower left to the upper right, against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top. In the foreground at lower left sits the oval bowl: broad, shallow, round-tipped, with edges slightly uneven from wear. From it rises an exceptionally long, narrow, flat handle that climbs in a gentle curve; its upper end is cut straight and tilts faintly backward. Soft light from the left catches the handle's edge in silvery highlights, while the bowl remains in greenish shadow. Patches of gray-green patina, small rough spots, and dull areas are visible, especially inside the bowl and near the tip — traces of age and probably of burial in the earth. There is no engraved decoration or visible inscription. To the right, a long, dark, soft-edged shadow runs almost parallel to the handle, emphasizing both scale and lightness. The composition is minimal: one fragile object, photographed close up in a neutral space so that its profile, proportions, and worn metal surface can be studied calmly, without any hand or table to give it a familiar size.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the oval bowl and follow the handle in a single sweep to its tip; the eye travels farther than expected. Then look back at the bowl's dull, darkened surface, where wear matters more than shine. The long parallel shadow makes the spoon seem at once grounded and floating.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this spoon, by an unknown maker, dates to Korea's Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) and is made of silver bronze. The broad date reflects the dynasty's span; a more precise year is not known. Celadons, spoons, seals, and bronze mirrors were among the most common burial goods in Goryeo tombs, where elaborate assemblages were believed to honor and comfort the dead. Many tombs remained untouched until the late 19th century, but during the colonial period (1910–45) Japanese archaeologists hastily excavated tombs in Kaeseong, the former Goryeo capital.

Curious detailDato curioso

The source notes that scholars have proposed that, toward the end of the 14th century, Koreans favored meat-based soups, which may explain why many more spoons than chopsticks were buried in tombs.

I focus on the greenish gray patina covering the inside of the bowl and on the tiny rough spots that speak of centuries underground. It is silvered bronze and it still keeps silvery highlights along the edge of the long thin handle, but wear has left the rims slightly irregular. There is no engraved decoration or inscription, just the honest elongated shape of an everyday object. Seeing its parallel shadow I understand its lightness and fragility. It moves me to think it accompanied someone in their tomb to bring comfort.

I see this spoon as a minimal constellation: a single diagonal line crossing a gray background that darkens toward the top like a night sky at dusk. Its exceptionally long handle looks like a comet and its shadow is like a second orbit running parallel to it. It amazes me that such a thin object has traveled from the Goryeo dynasty, between 918 and 1392, to the present day. It was part of a funerary assemblage, an offering to honor the departed, as if they wanted to leave food for a very long journey.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is just a spoon but it is super long, like it is made for giants. It goes diagonally from one corner to the other and it has a dark shadow that looks like its friend. The bottom part where soup goes is greenish and a bit scratchy, as if it was buried for a very long time, and the handle is skinny and shines a little in the light. It has no little drawings or letters. I imagine someone put it in a tomb many many years ago so the person would not be hungry wherever they went. It looks fragile and lonely.
