A studio photograph shows a single lidded urn centered against a smooth grey background that darkens toward the top. The object is symmetrical and rises in stacked tiers. At the bottom is a low, three-lobed white base edged in gold. Three gilded, winged creatures with lion-like paws support the body; between them rises a slender white central stem patterned with fine gold leaves. The main body is rounded and squat, like a compressed sphere. Around its widest part runs a continuous hand-painted landscape in soft greens, blues, and warm earth tones: a green meadow, distant blue hills, a pale sky, and tall reddish grasses on the left. Near the center, two small figures walk side by side carrying harvested sheaves. The woman wears a pink and purple top with a long blue skirt; her companion wears a red shirt and brown trousers. Above the landscape, a row of tiny white beads circles a shoulder decorated with delicate gold tracery. The lid is trimmed with a broad gold band and topped by a pierced white dome with gold ribs, ending in a small flared, three-lobed gold finial. The porcelain looks glossy and smooth, contrasting with the matte grey backdrop and the metallic shine of the extensive gilding.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny painted figures and notice how small they are compared with the gold ornament surrounding them. Then look at the pierced lid and the winged supports: those details change the piece from a simple container into a ceremonial, almost architectural object.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is 'Urn and cover,' made around 1815 by Flight, Barr and Barr in Worcester, England, in artificial porcelain. The work belongs to the Department of Decorative Art and Design at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it through the Bequest of Mary Warden Harkness. Flight, Barr and Barr was one of the names used by the Worcester porcelain factory in the early 19th century, a period when English makers produced highly decorated luxury wares. Its specific original use is not stated in the source; the pierced cover suggests it was probably intended for potpourri or perfume.

Curious detailDato curioso

The pierced, dome-shaped cover would allow scent to escape gradually, so the decoration was not only visual: the object probably also perfumed the room where it stood.

This urn by Flight, Barr and Barr, made around 1815 in Worcester, is a fine example of English Regency luxury. I focus on its layered construction: the trilobed base, the three gilded winged creatures with lion paws, the compressed spherical body, and the pierced dome with gilded ribs and finial. The soft-paste porcelain looks smooth and glossy, and gilding covers edges, leaves and delicate tracery. The hand-painted landscape amazes me for its miniature precision and soft palette.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this urn feels like a small planet with its own sky. The flattened body looks like a compressed sphere carrying a continuous horizon: green meadow, distant blue hills and a pale sky. There are even two tiny travelers carrying harvested sheaves, as if orbiting its equator. Above, the white pierced dome with gilded ribs reminds me of a stylized celestial vault. I love how a porcelain object can hold an entire landscape that you can follow with your eyes, like a circular panorama.

It looks like a fancy cake with superpowers! At the bottom there are three golden animals with wings and lion paws holding everything up like guardians. On its round belly there is a little painting of a green field with reddish grass and two tiny people carrying bundles; one wears a blue skirt and a pink and purple blouse. On top there is a lid full of golden decorations and a little ball on the tip. I imagine it holds lovely perfume and the scent comes out through the tiny holes in the lid.
