What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire frame, seen from above against a graduated background that shifts from black in the upper corners to gray below. It is a circular bronze disk, photographed from its back, with a slightly raised rim and a relief line marking an inner circle. Far from shiny, the surface has an uneven blue-green patina, with darker areas, turquoise flecks, small pits, scratches, and traces of corrosion that give it a rough, almost mineral texture. At the center rises a knob covered by a dense tuft of stiff coppery-brown fibers, like a hedgehog or a bristly pom-pom; it casts a short shadow to the right. Around it, in low and now worn relief, are two long-necked cranes with outspread wings, placed in opposite directions, one toward the upper left and the other below. Small blurred motifs surround them, resembling flowers, leaves, or birds, also in relief. Soft light emphasizes the edges and shows that the object is flat, thin, and intimate in scale, made to be held in the hand, although no human reference confirms its exact size.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the coppery tuft in the center, then follow the circle outward until you find the two cranes facing opposite directions. Look closely at the worn relief: the more blurred the small motifs become, the more the object reveals its age. Remember that the decorated side shown here is not the reflective one.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is an unknown maker's bronze mirror from Japan's Muromachi period, dated broadly to 1392–1573. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art's Japanese Art holdings and was a gift of D. Z. Norton. In premodern Japan, bronze mirrors typically had one polished, reflective face and a decorated back bearing auspicious designs. Cranes, or tsuru, are traditionally associated with longevity and good fortune, so a pair probably carried a wish for lasting happiness. It is not known who used this particular mirror, where exactly it was made, or how large its original cord was.

Curious detailDato curioso

What the photograph shows is the back of the mirror, not the reflecting surface; when new, the opposite polished bronze face would have served for seeing oneself.

I focus on the patina, that bluish green skin with turquoise speckles and tiny pits covering the bronze. It is not dirt, it is time. The metal oxidized unevenly and now looks like stone. I observe the worn relief of the cranes and the small motifs around them, almost erased by use and corrosion. At the center, the knob with its bristly coppery tuft still keeps its gripping function. It is an intimate, thin object, made to be held, and its wear tells its story.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see it as a small portable cosmos. The circular disc is like a dark moon with its raised rim marking the horizon. At the center, the knob with coppery fibers looks like a tiny sun casting a shadow. Orbiting around it are the two long necked cranes with outstretched wings, one at the top and one at the bottom, turning in opposite directions. The floral reliefs are like blurry constellations. Everything is photographed from above, against a background fading from black to gray, as if floating in space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant chocolate cookie with green mold, but it is a very old mirror. It does not shine at all because it is all stained green and blue. In the middle it has a brown pom pom with spikes like an angry hedgehog. On its sides there are two big long necked birds with open wings, as if they were dancing facing each other. Around them there are very tiny little flowers you can barely see. I like that the cranes are upside down, playing at spinning around.

How many cranes in relief can you count around the central knob?

    HintPista

Look for the long necks and outstretched wings, one is at the top left and the other at the bottom.

  2. #2

What color is the bristly tuft covering the knob at the center?

    HintPista

It is not green like the patina, it is a warm tone like a dry hedgehog.

  3. #3

The mirror is circular, what geometric shape does the raised line at the inner border outline?

    HintPista

Follow with your eyes the raised border that encloses the cranes, it matches the outer contour.
