What you would seeLo que verías
A long, narrow textile sash photographed vertically against a light gray background, hanging as if floating. It fills almost the entire frame, with the top edge slightly cropped and the bottom finished with fringe. Most of the surface is a plain field in creamy off-white, with a tight, slightly irregular handspun wool texture and subtle variations in weave tension. Thin red edging runs along both long sides, and small loose red knots and threads are visible at the top. About the lower third is a densely woven decorative band. This section features horizontal geometric stripes: an upper dark brown band with cream zigzag triangles, a narrow indigo blue stripe on brown, and in the center two large diamond shapes in vivid red filled with a fine cream lattice. Below, the blue stripe and the brown zigzag band repeat. The bottom finish is a broad fringe of long cream tassels, flanked by thick, fluffy tufts of unraveling red wool that hang to each side. Even, frontal lighting highlights the relief of the weave and the strong contrast between the empty field and the burst of color and pattern at the end.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the long empty cream field downward and see how it directs your gaze. Then pause on the two central red diamonds: their slightly imperfect symmetry reveals hand weaving. Finally look at the fringe and frayed red tufts at the edge, which show wear and the tactile quality of wool.
ContextContexto
This is a Hopi Brocade style dance sash, dated around 1874 to 1885, from the Pueblo cultures of the American Southwest, Post-Contact Late Classic Period. According to records from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed in the Textiles department as a Gift of Mrs. Lee McBride, the maker is unknown. It was made with plain weave and supplementary weft wrap, using handspun wool, Germantown wool, and bayeta wool. Sashes like this were worn wrapped or hanging during ceremonial dances. No detailed original description of its specific use is documented, but it was likely woven for community use or trade in the Hopi region of Arizona.

Curious detailDato curioso
Germantown wool noted in the technique was a commercially produced, brightly dyed yarn from Pennsylvania that became highly valued by Hopi and Navajo weavers in the late 19th century for its softness and vivid colors.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I pause on what looks simple: a cream field of hand-spun wool with a tight, slightly irregular weave, finished with a thin red edging. At the bottom the supplementary weft wrapping technique bursts forth, where the brown and cream zigzag, the indigo blue and the two large red diamonds reveal mastery of brocade. The cream fringe and the frayed red tassels are not just ornament, they are the very structure that speaks of the period between 1874 and 1885.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I look at this sash as if it were a night sky. The large cream expanse is the void, space on pause before the constellation appears. Below, everything concentrates: the brown zigzag like mountains cut against the horizon, the indigo blue stripe like a band of deep night, and at the center two intense red diamonds that look like twin stars or aligned suns. It makes me think about how Pueblo cultures read the cosmos through geometry, ordering the universe in diamonds, lines and perfect symmetry.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This sash looks like a giant scarf for a giant. Almost all of it is vanilla colored and very smooth, but at the bottom, boom! it has super pretty drawings. There are two big red diamonds with little white lines inside, like two little square hearts. Above and below them there are chocolate-colored zigzags and a very dark blue little stripe. And at the end hang soft creamy fringes with two red ponytails on the sides, as if it wanted to dance.

If you carefully count the decorative band at the bottom, how many large intense red diamonds will you find?
HintPista
Look at the center of the most colorful area, between the zigzag and blue stripes.
#2
The sash is dominated by a light plain field, what color is that large empty space that covers most of the textile?
HintPista
It is a light tone similar to vanilla, not pure white.
#3
At the lower end, what long, frayed trim hangs down like a tassel?
HintPista
Look at the tip of the sash that seems to float, there loose threads hang in two colors.
