What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal etching in black ink on warm cream paper shows a large, dilapidated timber-framed house filling almost the entire image. Seen at an angle, the building rises two storeys to a steep, uneven tiled roof with dormers, missing tiles and dark openings. Its plaster walls are cracked and patched, crossed by exposed wooden beams; some windows are shuttered, others are black voids. On the left, a lower lean-to with a sagging roof leads to a wide doorway of solid shadow. In the foreground, a rough dirt yard is scratched with long horizontal lines, scattered boards, crates or benches, tools leaning by a door, and a small dark shape at lower left that suggests a resting animal. At centre-right, partly hidden in a doorway, stands a tiny girl in a light dress, her face turned outward, accompanied by a fainter figure. To her right, a dense mass of dark brush or hay nearly reaches her height, and further right a tall wooden rack or ladder stands against a paler distant wall. Deep shadows pool under eaves and inside openings, contrasting with blank sky and sunlit patches of wall. The artist's signature, 'Whistler', appears at lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the roof and its dense, broken pattern, then follow the timber frame down to the black doorways. Only after taking in the scale of the ruin, look for the small girl at the centre-right: her presence changes a study of architecture into a scene of inhabited life. Finally, notice how the lightest areas are not the sky, but the worn ground and patches of wall.
ContextContexto
An Unsafe Tenement (1858) is an etching by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), an American artist who built much of his career in Europe. The source identifies it as a print from the Cleveland Museum of Art, donated by Frederick Keppel and Co., Inc. It belongs to Whistler's early printmaking period, when he was learning from Dutch etching and from direct observation of everyday places. In 1858 he travelled in eastern France and the Rhineland and made a group of etchings from nature, later known as the 'French Set'. The exact location of this house is not known; it was probably a rural building seen during that journey.

Curious detailDato curioso
At lower right the plate is simply signed 'Whistler'; years later the artist became famous for signing many works with a stylised butterfly monogram instead of his full name.

I focus on the black ink on warm cream paper and how the lines build decay. I see the cracked and patched plaster, the exposed beams, the irregular tiled roof with dormers and dark openings. I notice the windows, some shuttered and others like black voids, and the wide doorway that is a solid shadow. In the rough earthen courtyard I make out loose boards, boxes and tools leaning nearby. I think about the fragility of paper and how this etching preserves the texture of rural architecture marked by time.

I look at this house as if it were a night sky full of shadows. The steep roof and dormers remind me of irregular constellations cut against the light. I am drawn to the dark openings, windows and doorways that look like black holes absorbing the gaze. At the center right I spot the tiny girl in a light dress in the doorway, with a fainter figure beside her, like two pale stars in the gloom. Next to them the dense mass of brush and the tall wooden structure complete a landscape that invites long looking at everyday life.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This house looks old and a little spooky, with wood on the outside and a crooked roof full of little holes. I imagine it creaks when the wind blows. In the yard there is scratched earth, loose boards and little boxes that look like forgotten toys. Down on the left there is a dark smudge that looks like a sleeping animal and I want to pet it. In a small doorway near the center there is a tiny girl in a light dress peeking out, half hidden, and next to her there is tall brush that almost reaches her head.
