Silk taquete

What you would seeLo que verías

A rectangular fragment of cloth is shown horizontally, photographed straight-on against a very pale grey, faintly textured background. It fills nearly the whole frame. Its edges are irregular: the top and right sides fray, the bottom edge cuts straighter, and small amounts of material are lost at the corners. Across the surface runs an all-over repeating pattern of large pointed lozenges made by broad diagonal bands in beige and tan. Inside each lozenge sits a stylised floral medallion in muted green, dusty pink, and dark navy, surrounded by smaller branching stems, palmettes, and tiny flower heads. Where the bands intersect, small pink rosettes act as joints, giving the design a strict mirror symmetry both across and down. The dominant colours are deep navy blue, sandy beige and dull gold, with quieter accents of sage green and salmon pink, all softened by age. Light is even and diffuse, with no strong shadows, so the woven grain remains visible throughout: fine horizontal threads, slightly raised pattern areas, worn patches, small holes, snags, and loose fibres, especially near the top left and centre. The scale is unclear without a reference, but the fineness of the threads and the repetition suggest a larger textile from which this piece was cut.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the whole surface and locate the large lozenges formed by the diagonal bands. Then move closer to one of the small pink rosettes at an intersection and follow the green and navy branches spreading from it. Notice the wear, tears, and loose threads: they break the symmetry and remind us that this is only a surviving fragment of a larger cloth.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as Fragment, by an unknown maker, in silk taquete, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art with credit to the Dudley P. Allen Fund. Its own fields are inconsistent about dating: one gives the 1600s-1700s, while the culture field reads 'Iran, 19th c.'; the exact date is therefore not known from the data provided. Taquete is a weft-faced compound weave, suited to dense, repeating patterns woven directly into the structure of the cloth rather than printed or embroidered on top. Its original use, place of manufacture within Iran, and complete dimensions are not stated, so any specific function remains probable rather than certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the smallest pink rosettes work like joints in a net — each one sits exactly where the diagonal bands cross and anchors the whole repeating pattern.

  1. How does your reading of the fragment change if you imagine it as part of a garment rather than a furnishing cloth?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura del fragmento si lo imaginas como parte de una prenda y no como tela de mobiliario?
  2. What effect does strict repetition have here — order, richness, monotony, or something else?¿Qué efecto produce aquí la repetición estricta: orden, riqueza, monotonía u otra cosa?
  3. Should a museum display worn, frayed edges openly, or emphasise the pattern as it may once have looked?¿Conviene mostrar en el museo los bordes gastados y deshilachados, o destacar el patrón como pudo verse alguna vez?

Look closely and you will see this is not printed but woven. It is a silk taqueté, a structure where the threads themselves create the pattern as they interlace. I notice the soft relief of the motifs, the fine threads, the worn areas and the loose little threads at the top left and center. The irregular, frayed edges tell us this is only a cut fragment from a much larger cloth. Its deep palette of navy blue and beige, with pink and green softened by time, is preserved evenly thanks to the diffuse light in the photo.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this looks like a textile constellation. Everything is ordered with strict symmetry, horizontal and vertical, like a starry vault. The large pointed diamonds made of beige and toasted bands form a cosmic net and at each crossing a small pink rosette acts as a junction star. Inside each diamond floats a floral medallion in green, pink and dark navy, surrounded by stems and palmettes swirling like orbits. It is a repeated universe, dense and perfectly calculated to expand endlessly.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a map of giant diamonds. I see huge diamond shapes repeating everywhere with beige and toasted stripes. In the middle of each diamond there is a pretty little flower with green leaves and dusty pink on a very dark blue background. I like searching for the tiny pink flowers where the stripes cross, they are like buttons holding everything together. The cloth looks quite old, with loose little threads and tiny holes, especially at the top left. If you touch it with your eyes, it feels a bit rough with bumpy little drawings.
