What you would seeLo que verías

An elongated, irregular velvet fragment with a straight top edge and a curved lower and right edge forming a crescent shape, as if cut from a garment. The ground is a deep, almost black green with a plush, light-absorbing velvet pile, contrasted by a pattern in reserve of yellowed ivory, smooth and lustrous, where the silk satin shows without pile. In the foreground a large lobed orb medallion dominates, filled with a symmetrical bouquet of acanthus leaves, five-petaled blossoms and a stylized palmette on the central axis. From this orb, sinuous stems and tendrils branch toward the edges, forming scrolls, small leaves and clusters of tiny florets. The surface shows wear, horizontal loom creases and loss of pile in places that reveals the weave beneath. Raking light emphasizes the raised cut pile against the flat ground. Along the top edge a narrow pale green binding is visible. The scale is intimate, a textile object meant for close looking, with fine details of curling vines and dotted flower heads that reward patient attention.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the cut curved outline, then move into the large central orb to trace its leafy symmetry. Notice how the dark plush ground shifts with light against the smooth pale pattern. Look for the small scrolls and dotted blossoms near the edges, where you can imagine the design continuing beyond the fragment.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a silk velvet fragment attributed to Italy in the 1400s, maker unknown. It is catalogued as Velvet in the Textiles department and held with the Dudley P. Allen Fund credit. No further information is given about its exact provenance or original use. Broadly, Italy was a leading center for figured silk velvet production at that time, prized for elite and liturgical clothing and furnishings. The technique juxtaposes cut pile that creates the dark ground with pile-free satin areas that draw the design, producing a contrast of sheen and texture.

Curious detailDato curioso

Italian 15th-century figured velvet was woven on drawlooms that required two coordinated weavers, and even a single centimeter of this cut-pile and satin structure could take hours to complete.

This fragment speaks to me through tactile contrasts. The dark green almost black background is cut pile velvet that absorbs light, while the yellowish ivory pattern is smooth satin with no pile that shines. The wear, the loom wrinkles and the loss of pile show its age and its use, perhaps cut from a garment. I notice the pale green piping on the upper edge and the relief that raking light reveals. It is an Italian work from the fifteenth century made to be examined up close and felt with the eyes.

I see this lobed medallion as an orb or a planet seen up close. Its interior is a symmetrical system of acanthus leaves, five petal flowers and a central palmette that acts as an axis. From it emerge vegetal orbits, sinuous stems and tendrils that swirl like paths around it. The deep velvety background reminds me of the dark night sky that makes the bright satin constellations stand out. It is an orderly and expansive textile universe contained within an intimate fragment.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This little piece of cloth looks like a hidden garden. It has a big medallion in the middle like an island with lots of leaves and tiny five petal flowers. From there little branches curl like springs and make fun swirls toward the edges that are curved like a moon. The dark green velvet looks soft but worn and a bit wrinkly in some spots. I like the shiny ivory color that makes the pattern because it seems to light up the dark background. I would look at it with a magnifying glass really close.
