What you would seeLo que verías

The piece hangs vertically against a graded gray background, darker at the top and almost white at the center, with no other objects to provide scale. It is a wooden stringed instrument, elongated, with a body shaped like a pear or a wide drop at the bottom and a short, narrow neck above. The wood looks dark brown and polished, with visible grain and a soft sheen under diffuse light that casts no hard shadows. Four long, flat tuning pegs with rounded ends cross the upper headstock sideways; a small fan-shaped piece crowns the whole. Very fine strings descend from the pegbox—some loose and slightly curved—to a low, dark bridge near the base. Tiny gold butterflies are scattered along the neck. The body carries the richest decoration: two black crescent-shaped openings flank a bouquet of gold and cream peonies with green leaves. Below, a peacock with a golden body and fine profile gazes to the left; its blue-green tail, patterned with eye-like details, spreads out to the right. Beside it, a smaller golden bird curves over a horizontal black band. Near the bridge are polychrome floral motifs and golden clouds. The whole combines a functional instrument with a lacquered, painted surface of delicate, meticulous workmanship.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the silhouette: first the wide pear, then the short neck and the pegs that cut across it horizontally. Next, follow the strings downward until they lead you to the peacock among the peonies. Notice how the decoration does not hide the instrument; it turns its sounding surface into a small landscape.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this work is titled *Bugaku Biwa*, is by an unknown maker, and dates to the early to mid-1800s, in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). It is made of wood, belongs to the category of musical instruments, and is held in the Department of Japanese Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The biwa is a short-necked lute. The type associated with bugaku—the dance repertory of gagaku, Japanese court music—is generally larger and more heavily built than other biwas. Who made this example, who played it, and where it was used are not known; it was probably made for a ceremonial or courtly musical context.

Curious detailDato curioso

Its two sound holes are not round, but shaped like slender crescent moons, and they sit half-hidden among the flowers.

I come close to the lacquer and see time held still. The biwa is dark polished wood, but its pear-shaped body is covered by a golden garden that must not wear away. I notice the cream peonies, the blue-green peacock and the tiny butterflies on the short neck. Each thin string and each flat side peg needs care. This Edo period example, by an unknown maker, joins sound function and delicate surface. I think about how to protect the gold without silencing the music.

I see this lute hanging like a vertical constellation. The wide body below and narrow neck above remind me of a comet. The golden peacock spreads a tail of blue-green eyes that look like nebulae, and the two crescent-shaped sound holes are like moon phases flanking the peonies. The golden butterflies on the neck are shooting stars. It is a nineteenth-century instrument for bugaku, the dance of court gagaku, still orbiting between silence and ceremony.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a guitar shaped like a giant drop floating in the air! It is very wide at the bottom and has four little sticks on top to tune it. The prettiest part is that it is painted like a storybook: there are big cream flowers, a golden peacock with a super long green and blue tail, another tiny golden bird and shiny butterflies on the neck. It also has two black smiles like moons. I imagine that if you play it the flowers make sounds and the little birds sing.

  1. #1

If you count the musical eyes where the sound comes out, how many black smile-shaped moons do you see beside the flowers?

    HintPista

Look at the center of the wide body, on the sides of the peony bouquet.

  2. #2

At the top, on the head of the instrument, how many flat pegs cross the wood to tighten the strings?

    HintPista

Look at the narrowest, elongated part where the thin strings begin.

  3. #3

Among all the golden decoration, which long-tailed bird with eyes on its feathers looks to the left?

    HintPista

Search the lower part of the body for the golden figure with a spread blue-green tail.
