What you would seeLo que verías

A single bronze spoon occupies the center of the image against a plain, light-gray background, with no other objects or people. It stands in a diagonal pose: the bowl sits at lower left while the long handle rises toward the upper right, as if the utensil were balanced on end. The bowl is oval, broad, and shallow, with a slightly irregular rim; its dark interior shows wear, small scratches, and an unpolished surface. The handle is long and slender, gradually widening toward the top, where it ends in a flared, fan- or fishtail-like shape whose edge looks worn and incomplete. Light from the left casts soft highlights along the metal and throws a diffuse shadow to the right across the background. The dominant color is a very dark greenish gray, almost black, with silvery touches where light grazes the raised surface. Fine incised lines in a herringbone pattern run along parts of the handle, a dotted line follows its center, and just before the bowl three or four short rings circle the stem. The texture looks rough and aged, like old metal. Although it is an everyday object of modest scale, its isolated, upright presentation gives it the presence of a small, fragile sculpture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with its improbable posture: a utensil meant to lie flat and be used by hand reaches upward here, isolated from any table. Then move slowly down the handle, from its worn, flared end to the repeated incised marks. The small grooved rings just above the bowl repay a close look: on an object darkened and simplified by age, they show that even a daily tool was given deliberate finishing.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this bronze spoon by an unknown maker is dated only broadly to 918–1392, during Korea's Goryeo dynasty. Celadons, spoons, seals, and bronze mirrors were among the most common burial objects of the period, placed in tombs to honor and comfort the newly dead. The source notes that many Goryeo tombs remained untouched until the late nineteenth century, and that during the Japanese colonial period (1910–45) Japanese archaeologists hastily excavated tombs in Kaesong, the former Goryeo capital. It is not known who owned this spoon or which tomb, if any particular one, it came from.

Curious detailDato curioso

The source reports a recent scholarly proposal: toward the end of the fourteenth century Koreans favored meat-based soups, which may explain why far more spoons than chopsticks were placed in tombs — an eating habit inferred from burial goods.

  1. What does placing a spoon in a tomb suggest about care for the dead, and about what people imagined the afterlife would require?¿Qué sugiere depositar una cuchara en una tumba sobre el cuidado de los muertos y sobre cómo se imaginaba la vida después de la muerte?
  2. How does the object's reading change when we know it may come from a funerary context rather than a kitchen?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de la pieza al saber que probablemente viene de un contexto funerario y no de una cocina?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look closely at the metal and you will see its history. This bronze spoon from the Goryeo dynasty, broadly dated between 918 and 1392, has an almost black greenish gray tone with silvery highlights where light touches the surface. Its patina is rough and aged, the shallow oval bowl marked by wear and use. I pause on the engraved handle, with herringbone lines and a row of dots, and those three or four small rings right before the bowl. Displayed alone and diagonally, it feels like a small fragile sculpture.

I like to think about the time this object has traveled through. A single bronze spoon by an unknown maker, resting on a light gray background, placed diagonally with the bowl below and the handle rising as if pointing somewhere. We do not know which tomb it came from, only that objects like celadons, seals and mirrors accompanied the deceased to honor them. Light comes from the left and leaves a soft shadow to the right. Between 918 and 1392 lie centuries of nights and today this simple shape is still here, glowing faintly.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant spoon for a giant, but it is small and very very old. It is all alone in the picture, standing diagonally, with its round part at the bottom and its long stick going up ending in a little worn fish tail. It is dark gray almost black, but it shines a bit in the light. It has tiny drawings on the handle, like a little wheat spike and dots, and some small rings before the round part. I imagine someone using it a long long time ago to eat their soup.
