What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal etching in black and sepia ink on cream paper, drawn with loose, energetic lines and strong contrasts. At the centre, on a broad beach left almost empty in the foreground, a crowd of holidaymakers clusters together, caught out by the wind. The women wear long, full skirts, hats and parasols that bend, billow or open like sails; some lean forward, clutch their clothes and move in a group toward the left in search of shelter. Small children stand among the adults, tiny dogs run across the sand, and beach chairs lie overturned or abandoned, one of them at lower right casting a sharp shadow. On the left are awnings, beach shelters and buildings with small turrets; in the distance, several tall masts with little flags divide the sky. The left half is bright, with light clouds only lightly sketched, while the right is dominated by a huge, dense, dark cloud built up with cross-hatching. Beneath it, diagonal lines suggest rain falling over the sea, which forms a narrow strip along the horizon. At lower left is a handwritten inscription giving place, date and signature. Everything seems to move: fabrics, flags and shadows vibrate in the gust.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the enormous dark cloud on the right, then follow the slanted rain toward the sea. Next, look at the crowd in the middle: the umbrellas, skirts and flag tell you which way the wind is blowing. Finally, notice the empty sand and overturned chair in the foreground, which make the gust feel recent and sudden.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is The Squall at Trouville, an etching made in 1874 by Félix Hilaire Buhot (1847–1898), a French artist of the 19th century, and given to the museum by Frederick Keppel and Co., Inc. The inscription at lower left reads “Trouville, 4 août 1874.” Trouville, in Normandy, was then a seaside resort popular with summer visitors, a subject common in French art of the period. Buhot is best known for atmospheric prints and for urban and coastal scenes observed with wit. The source does not establish whether this records one specific storm that day or condenses a typical summer episode; it probably begins from something seen on 4 August.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: near the centre, just in front of the crowd, a dark shape sprawled on the sand looks at first like a person knocked down by the wind, while around it the small dogs remain remarkably calm.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Are the people fleeing the storm, enjoying the spectacle, or both at once?¿La gente huye de la tormenta, disfruta el espectáculo o hace ambas cosas a la vez?
  2. How can an image without colour make us feel wind, noise and approaching rain?¿Cómo logra una imagen sin color hacernos sentir el viento, el ruido y la lluvia que se acerca?
  3. What changes if we imagine this same beach a few minutes later, once the squall has passed?¿Qué cambia si imaginamos esta misma playa unos minutos después, cuando ya pasó el chubasco?

I focus on technique: this is an etching in black and sepia ink on cream paper, with a loose and highly contrasted line. I see how Buhot darkened the huge cloud on the right with dense cross-hatching while he left the left side luminous, with clouds barely sketched. At the lower left is the handwritten inscription «Trouville, 4 août 1874». I am drawn to the overturned chairs in the foreground and the strong shadows: they convey the wind without needing any color.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me in is the sky split in two. On the left there is light, thin clouds and tall masts with little flags that already hint at the gust, in the background, above a narrow strip of sea. On the right a huge, dark, dense cloud dominates as it moves over the beach and releases rain in diagonal lines. It is a summer squall very well observed: the contrast between brightness and darkness tells, in a single image, how quickly coastal weather can change.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the wind wants to blow everything away! I see a crowd of ladies with long skirts and umbrellas bending as if they might fly, all walking together to the left to hide. There are kids among the adults, little dogs running and beach chairs knocked over on the sand, one really big one close up. It makes me laugh and also a bit nervous, like when rain surprises you at the beach and everyone runs at the same time.
