What you would seeLo que verías

Against a uniform matte black background, a single metal object floats vertically centered, shaped like a sturdy, elongated S. It is a firearm hammer seen in profile. The surface is darkened steel, with mottled hues of brownish grey, black and silvery highlights where light catches. At the bottom, a square hole pierces a rounded boss for the tumbler axle. The central body curves gracefully and is covered with extremely fine engraving: scrolls, foliage and vegetal volutes that shine against the patinated metal. At the top the piece splits into two arms: the left shorter and hook-shaped, the right raised like a spur with a crosshatched thumb grip. Side lighting emphasizes the relief of the engraving, tiny pits of rust and wear from use. Texture shifts from polished steel to rough, aged corrosion. No human scale is present, but the object reads as small, a few centimeters long, heavy and solid to the touch.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the elegant S silhouette, then look closely at the dense foliate engraving covering almost the entire surface. Notice how light brings out the contrast between the bright pattern and the dark patina. Finally examine the small square eye at the base and the hatched spur at the top, traces of its mechanical purpose.

ContextContexto

This is a percussion gun-lock hammer dated c. 1800–1825 and attributed to England, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Arms and Armor collection. The maker is unknown. Made of steel, it was the part of the lock that struck the percussion cap to fire a rifle or pistol. It belongs to the transition from flintlock to percussion systems in the early 19th century. Its original firearm and specific workshop are not documented. The ornamental engraving suggests it probably came from a high-quality civilian arm, not a purely military or utilitarian one.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although housed in the Medieval Art department for historical collection reasons, this hammer is far later than the Middle Ages and shows the English tradition of decorating even the smallest mechanical gun parts with floral engraving in the 19th century.

This hammer makes me look slowly. I see darkened steel with a brownish gray patina and silvery highlights where the light hits. What matters most to me is the very fine engraving of scrolls and leaves covering the S-shaped curved body. Below I distinguish the square eye for the shaft, above the two arms, one hook-shaped and the other like a striated spur for the thumb. I notice light pitting from rust and polished wear from use, signs of a small but heavy and highly crafted object.

I like to think about mechanisms that measure brief moments, and this hammer was one of them. It was part of a percussion lock from around 1800 to 1825, during the transition from flint to modern percussion, and its function was to strike the cap to detonate the charge. I imagine that minimal instant, the click of the spur under the thumb and the turn on its square axle. The black background of the record reminds me of emptiness: an isolated piece floating, like a fragment of a technical constellation from nineteenth-century England.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic S floating in the darkness. At the bottom it has a little square hole like a tiny window, and at the top two little horns, one is a small hook and the other is scratchy so your finger does not slip. It is all scribbled with little tangled plant drawings that shine. It looks old, with dark speckles, but it also shines where the light hits it. It is small, about my hand, but you can tell it is very heavy and that before it would go bang and hit very hard.

It is the darkest tone in the palette, almost like night with no light.

  2. #2

If you count the upper arms of the hammer, how many are there and how is the edge of the tallest one?

    HintPista

Look at the forked top part, one is a short hook and the other is the spur for the thumb.

  3. #3

At the bottom the piece has a little hole to fit on the shaft. What shape is that opening?

    HintPista

It is not round, it has four equal sides.
