What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a soft gradient from dark charcoal at the top to pale light gray below, a clear lidded glass vessel stands upright. The body is tapered, wider at the rim and narrower toward a thick, rounded foot, all hand-blown with subtle thickness variations and tiny trapped air bubbles. The glass is transparent with gentle highlights along its edges. The lid is tall and steeply conical with a wide, stepped flange that rests on the rim, topped by a teardrop finial with a small collared ring at its base. On the front wall, an opaque white wheel-engraved decoration stands out: a large central stylized tulip with pointed petals, flanked by scrolling tendrils and two sprays of feathery foliage with small hanging berries or buds. Wavy engraved borders extend to either side of the upper flower. Front lighting creates a soft shadow beneath the base and emphasizes the contrast between the glossy clear surface and the matte etched ornament, while faint reflections define the curvature of lid and body.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette and the pointed finial, then move down to the frosted engraving. Notice how light passes through the clear wall and reveals tiny bubbles from blowing. Look closely at the slightly irregular symmetry of the tulip and scrolls, a sign of hand work.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a Flip Glass by an unknown maker, dated to the late 1700s and attributed to America, late 18th century, classified as Glass in the Decorative Art and Design department. The source description provides no further details. Flip glasses were lidded vessels for a popular colonial hot drink made of beer or cider, rum and beaten egg, kept warm by the cover. The engraved floral motif is typical of German-American glass of Pennsylvania, where craftspeople of German descent decorated blown glass with wheel-engraving. The exact workshop for this piece is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Lidded flip glasses were used for flip, a colonial tavern drink that was frothed by plunging a red-hot iron called a loggerhead into the mixture of beer and rum.

I pause at what the glass tells without words. It is hand-blown, visible in the tiny bubbles and in how light breaks along the edges. The engraving is not paint, it is abrasion made with a wheel that leaves the design in opaque, velvety white. That large tulip-like flower with its symmetrical foliage is fragile, any abrasive cleaning would erase it. The conical lid with its teardrop finial fits with a precise step to keep the heat inside.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this glass as a small observatory of light. The clear glass acts like a lens that captures the frontal brightness and returns it in soft reflections, while the graded gray background makes it seem to float in a void. The frosted engraving is like a constellation: a central tulip as the main star and two sprays that open like symmetrical orbits. The lid with its teardrop finial is the dome that closes the experiment.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic fairytale glass. It is transparent and shiny, like ice that never melts, and it has a pointy little lid with a droplet on top that looks like a jewel. On the front there is a big white flower drawn on it, like a tulip, with two little branches falling to the sides with tiny balls. I imagine it was for drinking warm hot chocolate and the lid was to keep it from getting cold.
