What you would seeLo que verías
The piece fills almost the entire frame, centered against a background that fades from black at the top to gray below. It is a sword guard with an oval outline and scalloped edge, photographed front-on and in close-up, with no other objects to provide scale, although it reads as a small object made for the hand. At the center is a vertical, elongated wedge-shaped opening, narrow at the top and wider at the base. It is surrounded by a rectangular metal frame with chiseled waves that recall water or flames. On both sides, set within smooth ovals of greenish-gray tone and grainy surface, are two inset pieces that contrast with the rough, almost black-brown iron of the whole. The entire rim is pierced and modeled in high relief: at the top, a crouching animal can be made out, a Japanese lion, with one paw extended over a peony. At the bottom, another large flower opens its petals among leaves and stems that curve and curl up the sides, forming heart-shaped gaps. Raking light emphasizes shadows, rust, nicks, and small irregularities; shiny wear is visible on the highest parts of the relief.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central opening, where the blade once passed, and then follow the rim outward. Notice how the lion at the top and the large peony at the bottom balance each other. The contrast between the rough, dark iron and the two smooth, pale ovals changes the reading: this is protection, but also miniature sculpture.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a *Sword Guard (Tsuba) with Lions in Peonies*, by an unknown maker, dated to about 1615–1868, probably from Edo-period Japan. It is made of iron and belongs to the Arms and Armor category, in the Department of Japanese Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a Gift of D. Z. Norton. A tsuba separates a Japanese sword's blade from its handle and protects the hand. In general, the lion and peony were a frequent paired motif in Japanese art. The specific maker, place of production, and sword it belonged to are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Lions are not native to Japan: the Japanese lion, or *shishi*, reached Japanese art through China and Buddhist imagery, which is why it is often depicted among peonies rather than in a real natural habitat.

What holds my attention is the iron surface, brownish almost black, rough and marked by time. The raking light reveals the high relief, the shiny worn spots and the contrast with the two gray greenish ovals, smooth and granular, on each side of the central opening. It was made between 1615 and 1868, in the Edo period, and although we do not know who forged it, the openwork and carving are remarkable. It is small, made for the hand, yet the lion and peonies are modeled with a monumental strength.

I see it as a small system in balance. In the center, the long wedge shaped opening is like an empty axis that divides the sky of this piece. Above and below, the lion and peonies fill the scalloped oval openwork border, with gaps that let light through like constellations. The background fading from black to gray reminds me of the transition from night to dawn. It is a guard that protects the hand on the sword, but here it feels like a miniature universe to observe calmly.

It looks like an iron cookie shaped like an egg with drawings that pop out a lot. On top there is a crouching lion with its little paw on a giant flower, and below there is another peony with leaves that curl and leave little heart shaped holes. In the middle there is a long hole where the sword went through. I like that it is rough and dark but has smooth gray greenish parts on the sides. If you touch it with your eyes, you feel the lion is guarding you among flowers.
