Centered against a soft gradient from dark charcoal to mid-gray, a small circular Japanese tsuba is shown in sharp front view. The iron is very dark — near-black with warm brown undertones — matte, pitted and patinated, catching subtle highlights on the raised edges. A thick, smooth outer rim encloses an intricate openwork interior. The large, vertical, gourd-shaped central opening for the blade dominates, flanked by two smaller oval side openings. The remaining metal forms two plump, cheerful figures standing on a rocky, wave-like ground line at the bottom. On the left, a figure in a cap carrying a large sack over the shoulder; on the right, a figure in a pointed hat holding a large fish aloft over the back. Their faces are caricatured with broad smiles, puffed cheeks and squinted eyes. Their robes show incised folds and fine geometric textile patterns, softened by age and corrosion. Negative space between the figures, the fish tail, the sack and the rim creates delicate silhouettes. Soft top lighting models the low relief, deepens shadows in the pierced areas, and reveals the rough, granular texture, tiny rust specks and gentle wear around the central seppa-dai.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the perfect circle and the empty central slot that gives the object its use. Trace the pierced shadows to discover the two smiling figures facing each other. Focus on the fish held aloft on the right — that tiny attribute identifies Ebisu and turns the guard from mere hardware into a traveling charm of prosperity.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a Sword Guard (Tsuba) with Daikokuten and Ebisu, by an unknown maker, dated c. 1615–1868, possibly Edo period (1615–1868), Japanese culture, classified under Arms and Armor in the Japanese Art department. A tsuba is the hand guard placed between blade and hilt of a Japanese sword. The decoration said to show Daikokuten and Ebisu — two of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods — is a common auspicious theme in Edo-period metalwork. No specific technique is listed in the source, but the work is probably iron with openwork and relief carving, typical of tsuba smithing traditions. Further details about provenance or workshop are not given.

Curious detailDato curioso

Daikokuten and Ebisu are two of the Shichifukujin, the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese folklore, often paired as patrons of abundance — Daikokuten with his rice sack and Ebisu the fisherman with a sea bream, both symbols of plentiful food and successful trade.

I focus on the surface of this forged iron, dark between graphite and rusty brown, with its matte porous patina that shows pitting and worn highlights. I observe the thick smooth outer rim framing the openwork and the relief of the two smiling figures standing on the rocky base. I am interested in how the soft overhead light defines the folds of the kimonos and the deep shadows inside the openings, and how time has eroded the fine incised details near the elongated central aperture.

I see this tsuba as a small system with luminous voids. The elongated central opening for the blade dominates the center, flanked by two smaller oval openings and by irregular gaps between the figures that let light through like constellations. The two chubby smiling figures seem to balance each side, one with a sack over the shoulder and the other holding a large fish. I love imagining how light passes through the dark metal and casts sharp shadows against the gradient background from gray to black.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two happy grandpas trapped inside a dark metal cookie! Both are chubby-cheeked and smiling with tiny squinty eyes. One carries a sack on his back and the other hugs a huge fish almost as big as he is. They stand on wavy little rocks wearing kimonos with tiny lines. In the middle there is a long hole for the sword blade and on the sides there are other little holes where light shines through. The whole edge is round and thick like a little burnt donut ring.

  1. #1

If you count the holes that go completely through the metal, including the large central one for the blade, how many are there in total, adding the two small ovals and the gaps between the figures?

    HintPista

Look at the center and then to the sides: light passes through the metal in more than three places.

  2. #2

Of the two smiling figures in relief, which one is holding a large fish in its hands?

    HintPista

Look for the figure with the pointed hat to the right of the central opening.

  3. #3

What is the approximate color of the dark patina that dominates the tsuba, according to the recorded tones?

    HintPista

Think of old iron, almost black but with brownish touches from rust.
