What you would seeLo que verías

A nearly circular, slightly oval iron disc fills almost the entire frame, photographed front-on against a background that fades from black at the top to dark gray below. Its surface is dark brown, almost black, mottled and finely grainy like weathered metal, with a narrow raised rim catching a soft highlight around the edge. In the center are two openings: a tall, narrow wedge-shaped slot, flat at the bottom and tapering upward, and to its left a smaller smooth oval hole. Near the top, a goose flies diagonally down toward the left in low relief, body dark, wings spread and carved with fine parallel feather lines. Tiny touches of gold pick out its beak tip, eye, neck bands, and dangling feet. From the lower edge rise slender plants with branching, coral-like golden stems and long, pointed dark leaves, one stem climbing the right side, another entering from the lower left. The leaves overlap near the bottom, creating a quiet arc that echoes the disc's curve. The lighting is even and soft, revealing the contrast between the rough iron ground, the smoother raised leaves and bird, and the brighter metallic gold. No people, text, or other objects appear; the scale is conveyed only by the object's compact, hand-sized presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two dark openings in the center and imagine the blade and handle that once passed through them. Then follow the golden stems from the lower rim upward until your eye reaches the goose. Notice how that small amount of gold makes the bird's eye, beak, and feet glow against the somber iron.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a sword guard, or tsuba, titled Goose in Reeds, made in Japan, possibly during the Edo period (c. 1615–1868), by an unknown maker. It is listed as iron, in the categories of Arms and Armor and Japanese Art, and was a gift of D. Z. Norton. A tsuba sits between a sword's blade and its grip, helping to protect the hand and balance the weapon. The exact workshop, owner, and year of manufacture are not known; the very broad date reflects that uncertainty.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the tsuba was a functional part of a sword, in Edo-period Japan such guards also became small canvases for metalwork, with nature scenes worked in relief and precious-metal inlay on a piece only a few inches across.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does a scene of a bird among reeds change the meaning of an object made for a weapon?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de un objeto hecho para un arma cuando lleva una escena de un ave entre plantas?
  2. Why might the maker have left so much of the dark iron surface empty?¿Por qué el artesano habrá dejado vacía tanta superficie de hierro oscuro?
  3. What do you notice differently when you imagine holding this guard in one hand rather than seeing it flat in a photograph?¿Qué notas distinto al imaginar esta guarda sostenida en una mano, en vez de verla plana en una fotografía?

This iron disc makes me think about patience. Its surface is a dark brown, almost black, mottled and fine-grained, and the raised rim catches light with a soft shine. The goose in relief is smoother than the rough background and has golden touches on its beak, eye, neck and dangling legs. The reed stems are also golden and contrast with the dark leaves. I imagine cleaning that gold carefully without altering the dark patina of the aged iron.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this tsuba as a little night sky. The background is dark, made of iron that shifts from black to gray, and across it a goose flies diagonally, with outstretched wings and fine lines marking feathers. The golden touches look like stars: they shine on the beak, eye and legs. Below, the golden reeds arch like constellations. It has two openings at the center, one wedge-shaped and one small oval, that let light pass through as if they were cut-out moons.

It looks like a dark cookie with a duck flying on it. The disc is very dark brown, almost black, and about the size of my hand. The goose is flying downward with wide open wings and has shiny little golden dots on its beak and little legs. At the bottom there are little plants with golden stems that look like coral trees and pointy leaves. It has two little holes in the middle, one long and one tiny, and a rim that shines a little all around.
