What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a dark, softly graduated background, a Japanese sword guard, or tsuba, is shown frontally as if floating in space. The piece is forged iron, nearly round with four gentle lobes forming a subtly flower-like mokkō outline. Its surface is rough, pitted and heavily patinated, a matte graphite black mottled with reddish brown and ochre rust, especially around the central opening. At the center are two apertures: an elongated triangular nakago-ana for the blade tang and an adjoining oblong hitsu-ana for a sword fitting. Diagonally placed at upper right and lower right, two openwork silhouettes depict stylized dragonflies, their bodies, elongated wings and dot-like eyes created by negative cutouts. Frontal lighting emphasizes the granular texture, uneven rim and the thickness of the plate. In real life it would fit in the palm of a hand. On close looking, the contrast between the heavy, weathered iron and the airy, delicate insects defined by empty space is the most moving detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the whole rusted disc and then follow the diagonal formed by the two pierced dragonflies. Notice how empty space alone draws wings and eyes with minimal lines, and how the rust patterns reveal age on the iron.

ContextContexto

This is a tsuba, the guard placed between the blade and hilt of a Japanese sword to protect the hand. According to the source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is by an unknown maker, made of iron and dated c. 1615 to 1868, possibly from the Edo period. It is classified under Arms and Armor in the Japanese Art department. No further description is given in the source record and the specific workshop is not known. Tsuba combined utility with ornament, and natural motifs such as dragonflies were common for their symbolic associations with courage and victory. The work entered the collection as a gift of D. Z. Norton.

Curious detailDato curioso

In samurai culture the dragonfly, known as kachinmushi or victorious insect, symbolized courage and good fortune in battle, which is why it often appeared on armor and sword fittings.

Above all I see a tired and beautiful iron. That graphite-black surface, rough and porous, is speckled with ochre and reddish brown rust, especially around the central opening. I am moved by how the heavy metal breathes through the openwork: two dragonflies cut in negative, with elongated wings and small circular eyes, at the upper right and lower right. It has a soft four-lobed flower shape, a mokkō form, and two apertures: a triangular one for the blade and an oblong one for the kōgai. It would fit in a palm, yet its patina speaks of centuries.

This tsuba looks like a small eclipse to me. The dark disc of forged iron, with its flower-shaped rim, floats like a rusted planet. At its center, the triangular opening and the oblong hole are like transits of light. And the best part: two cut-out constellations, two dragonflies on a diagonal that let the background shine through. It makes me think of the contrast between heavy and light, between an object that protected a samurai hand and the lightness of an insect we now associate with summer. A guard from the Edo period, between 1615 and 1868, that still lets stars show through.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a black iron cookie with orange rust dust. It is shaped like a little flower with four puffy cheeks and in the middle a tiny triangle hole and another longer one beside it. The prettiest thing is that it has two dragonflies with long wings that are real holes, you can see through them. One is higher up and the other lower, on the right side. It is tiny, it fits in my hand, and it is heavy even though it has little flying animals. I like that something so hard has such soft and delicate drawings.
