What you would seeLo que verías

The object is a circular iron tsuba viewed frontally, centered against a dark gradient background fading from black to soft gray, which emphasizes its openwork silhouette. It fills most of the frame and displays a rough, pitted, darkened surface with graphite black, rust brown and subtle corroded highlights along the rim. At the center is the elongated triangular nakago-ana, the central slit where the blade once passed, flanked by two smaller oval openings for accessories, one partly closed. The right and upper half features radiant openwork formed by about seventeen elongated chrysanthemum petals, thin arched bars creating a fan or rising sun effect with empty space visible behind. The left half is solid, finely engraved with delicate radial lines suggesting rays of light, and at the lower left a small five-petaled cherry blossom is cut out, its stamens detailed at the center. The outer rim is smooth and slightly raised, framing the composition with restrained craftsmanship and a sense of aged weight.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the airy openwork of the chrysanthemum and the solid, textured ground on the left. Follow the fine radial lines that radiate from the center toward the rim. Linger on the small cut-out cherry blossom at the lower left, where delicacy softens the iron and changes the piece from purely martial to poetic.

ContextContexto

This Japanese sword guard, or tsuba, is dated to the Edo period (1615–1868) according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Japanese Art department under Arms and Armor. It is made of iron and its maker is unknown, as is common for many functional fittings of this era. Tsuba protected the bearer’s hand and balanced the katana or wakizashi, while also serving as personal artistic statements for samurai. Chrysanthemum and cherry blossom motifs were popular in Edo art for their seasonal and imperial associations. No specific information about its workshop or original owner is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the Edo period, iron tsuba like this were often treated to achieve a deep black-brown patina that helped prevent rust, and chrysanthemum designs were linked to the Japanese imperial household.

I focus on the skin of this iron, it is not smooth or perfect and that is where its history lies. I see a rough, porous surface with a dark patina in graphite black and rust brown tones, with soft corrosion on the edges that speaks of centuries. The contrast between the light openwork of the chrysanthemum and the solid area with radial scoring makes me think of forging and filing work. It is a utilitarian piece that has survived time and still keeps with dignity the marks of use and age.

When I look at this tsuba I do not see just a sword guard, I see a small sun. The radiant openwork on the right half, with its seventeen fine arches like rays, reminds me of a rising sun or an open fan against the dark sky of the background. The solid area with radial lines reinforces that idea of light expanding outward. And in the lower corner, the cut-out cherry blossom is like a delicate constellation. It is an object that balanced the katana and also balances light and emptiness.

It looks like a dark iron cookie with a very pretty shape. Half of it is like a sun with many long petals that let light through, and you can see through the little holes. The other half has little lines as if the sun is shining. At the bottom there is a little flower with five petals and dots in the center, that is my favorite part. In the middle it has three little holes, one big triangle-shaped one and two tiny ones. I like to imagine it is a tiny shield for a samurai.
