What you would seeLo que verías

A flat circular object centered and photographed from the front against a gradient background from dark charcoal at top to light gray at bottom, presented as an isolated sculpture. It is an iron tsuba, roughly eight to nine centimeters across, with a very dark, almost black patina mottled with reddish brown rust and a rough, granular texture. The center is pierced by an elongated triangular opening for the blade, framed by a thick oval rim with subtle irregularities and wear. Flanking this aperture on both sides are small oval inlays with a bumpy shagreen-like surface in pale speckled gray. The outer edge is not a solid ring but an openwork silhouette of stylized waves, with curling crests, swirling tendrils and foam suggested by scrolls and small raised beads. Negative space between the waves reveals the background. Soft top lighting picks out highlights on the raised ridges and deep shadows in the cutouts, emphasizing the heaviness of the metal and the sense of a turbulent sea frozen in iron.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the outer edge and follow the continuous flow of waves circling the empty center. Then focus on the contrast between the dark smooth iron of the rim and the pale granular patches flanking the central opening. That small textural contrast shifts the reading from mere armor to functional jewelry.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a Japanese sword guard or tsuba dated to the Edo period (1615–1868), made of iron by an unknown maker. Tsuba protected the hand of the bearer of a katana or wakizashi and also served as personal ornament and status symbol for the samurai class. The rough wave motif is common in Japanese art and evokes power and motion. No specific information about the workshop or original owner is recorded, and the piece was likely hand-forged and pierced using traditional metalworking techniques.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it now looks like a decorative artwork on its own, the tsuba helped balance the Japanese sword and its weight and shape directly affected how the weapon handled.

What moves me most is how the iron still breathes despite its weight. This tsuba, about eight to nine centimeters across, has an almost black patina with reddish rust tones and a grainy texture that speaks of centuries. Look at the thick oval rim around the central opening and the two light speckled areas with ray skin texture on either side. The openwork edge shaped like waves with curled crests and foam spheres lets light through and lightens the dark metal.

Seen head-on and centered, this tsuba looks like a small iron eclipse. The dark disk, about eight centimeters wide, floats against a soft gray gradient and its cut-out edge reveals empty space between the waves like constellations. The triangular hole in the center where the blade once fit feels like a portal. The two pale mottled inlays on the sides remind me of speckled moons accompanying the fury of the sea frozen in metal from the Edo period.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an angry iron cookie shaped like waves! It is a dark, rough circle about nine centimeters wide and in the middle it has a little triangle hole to hold the samurai sword. On the sides there are two light, scratchy patches. The most fun part is the edge, all curled like giant waves with little foam dots that look like bubbles. If you look closely you can see the gray background peeking through the tiny gaps between the waves.
