What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a smooth gradient background, shifting from almost black at the top to light gray at the bottom, appears a single metal disc photographed frontally and occupying most of the frame. Its outline is not fully round: four gentle lobes give it a restrained floral or quatrefoil silhouette. The surface is dark iron, brown and nearly black, with a rough, granular, aged texture, marked by small pits and uneven patches suggestive of wear and oxidation. A thin gold-toned rim runs along the entire edge, following every curve. Just inside it, a continuous ring of short segments, like a wire coiled around a cord, creates a pronounced relief; some segments catch the light and look golden, while others remain in shadow. In the center, a relatively flat and emptier area contains three openings that pierce the piece: in the middle, a narrow vertical slit widening downward; on the left, an irregular shape with a small notch; on the right, a smoother oval. There are no figures, inscriptions, people, or landscape. The scale relative to a hand is not shown, but every irregularity of the metal remains clearly visible.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the three openings in the center and imagine the blade passing vertically through the narrow middle slit. Then follow the ring of wire near the edge and notice how its rhythm changes with the light. That contrast between the rough plate and the precise wrapping changes the reading: it is not only protection, but also careful ornament.
ContextContexto
This piece is catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art as Sword Guard, by an unknown maker, dated only to 1615–1868, Japan's Edo period, and made of iron. It was a gift of D. Z. Norton and belongs to the areas of Arms and Armor and Japanese Art. Objects of this type, generally known as tsuba, were mounted between the blade and the grip of a Japanese sword to protect the hand and balance the weapon. The specific sword it belonged to, its owner, and its exact date within that long period are not known; it was probably made to be used, not only to be contemplated.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail is that the outer edge is not a perfect circle: it has four soft lobes that gently interrupt the outline, so the form is only revealed after looking at the silhouette for a few seconds.

I focus on what time left on the iron. That rough, grainy surface, between dark brown and black, with pitting and wear, speaks of use and oxidation. The thin golden rim that follows the four soft lobes and the ring of coiled wire fascinate me: there light reveals golden highlights and shadows. I clean without erasing history. The three central openings are empty and flat, and show that this guard, this tsuba from the Edo period between 1615 and 1868, was forged to protect the hand and balance the sword, not just to be admired.

I see this guard as a small system. Against a background fading from almost black to light gray, that dark iron floats with its four-lobed flower shape. The golden rim is like an orbit containing everything. The inner ring of coiled segments reminds me of illuminated craters, some shining golden and others staying in shadow. In the center, three voids: a vertical slot, an oval, and a notched shape. Three mysteries aligned, like planets waiting for us to imagine the blade that once passed through them.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a chocolate cookie shaped like a flower with four giant petals. It looks old, rough and covered with little dots everywhere. It has a shiny golden edge that goes all around and inside a little coiled cord that looks like a golden worm. In the middle it has three funny little holes: one long like a skinny door, one oval, and one with a tiny bite taken out. It has no little drawings or people. I imagine it is the shield of a samurai sword to keep the hand safe.
