What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire frame, centered against a plain background that shifts from dark gray at the top to a lighter gray below, with no hard shadows or other objects. It is a circular, flat, openwork object photographed from the front. At its center is a solid vertical oval with an elongated, slightly triangular opening through which the blade would pass. Japanese characters are engraved vertically to the right of that opening; on the left are two shorter marks. Around it, the metal forms an open design of sinuous lines suggesting currents of water. At the lower center, a spiral whirlpool draws the eye; in the upper left, a bird with a curved neck and folded wings, probably a crane, appears amid stylized waves. Curving ribbons, scrolls, and small spherical terminals fill the circle without closing its openings, through which the background remains visible. Everything is dark iron, almost black, with brownish tones and a rough, grainy, matte surface marked by wear. The outer rim is scalloped, like a succession of small beads. Frontal light reveals fine relief, parallel lines within the waves, and the irregular thickness of the worked metal.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the solid oval in the center and its empty slot, then follow the water-like lines as they circle it. Find the whirlpool at the bottom and the bird in the upper left. Noticing how much of the disc is open space changes it from a simple barrier into a small landscape of moving water.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this sword guard is by an unknown maker, dates to the early 1800s, and comes from Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). It is made of iron, belongs to the categories of Arms and Armor and Japanese Art, and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift from D. Z. Norton. This type of piece, generally known as a tsuba, was placed between the blade and the grip to protect the hand and help balance the weapon. It is not known who made it or for whom; the visible inscription is not transcribed in the data provided. It was probably both a practical object and a sign of taste or status.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: although this is a solid piece of iron, most of its circle is air; the design holds together through thin, curving bridges around the rim and the solid center.

I focus on the surface of this dark iron, almost black, with brownish tones and a grainy, matte texture. I can see the wear of time, but also the fine craftsmanship: the parallel lines of the waves, the dented rim like tiny beads, and the openwork that lets the background show through. In the center, the elongated slit for the blade and, beside it, the vertically engraved characters that we cannot transcribe. I wonder how the practical and decorative were balanced to protect the hand without losing lightness.

I see this circle as if it were an orbit. The openwork metal leaves gaps like space between stars, and in the center the oval opening is a small eclipse where the blade once passed. I am drawn to the spiral whirl at the bottom, it looks like a spinning galaxy, and at the upper left the long-necked bird, perhaps a crane, like a constellation caught among currents. The dark iron reminds me of the night sky, and the beaded rim suggests a ring containing all the movement.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a round iron cookie with lots of little holes where you can see the background. In the middle it has a funny hole to slide the sword through and on the sides there are little drawings with Japanese letters. At the bottom there is a curly swirl like a water snail and at the top left there is a bird with a bent neck, I think it is a crane, swimming among little waves. Everything is black and brown, rough, and the edge looks made of tiny balls. I like counting the holes.
