What you would seeLo que verías

A painted illustration, in a slightly grainy gouache-like texture, shows a large orbital station diagonally across a black-brown sky. At upper left, the words SPACE BASE appear in bold white capitals. Below, the curved horizon of Earth fills the bottom of the image with broad brushstrokes of cobalt blue, pale blue, white clouds, and patches of olive green and ochre suggesting land and atmosphere. The station, seen in three-quarter view and with no human figures, combines long silver-gray cylinders crossed like an irregular X. At center, an orange band wraps the main module, dotted with small round, cream-colored windows. Two larger end modules hang at different angles; one, at lower center, shows a dark circular interior, while another, at upper left, has a flat dark opening. Thin needle-like arms extend toward the right, one ending in a pointed tip. Small bright orange discs and rectangular pieces, suspended by fine dotted lines, punctuate the metallic gray. Highlights run along the tubes, giving them a smooth, reflective feel against the matte planet. At lower right, the small white code MSFC-70 is partly cropped. The scale feels monumental because the station dominates the foreground and Earth appears only as a curve.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the horizon of Earth and follow the station's main diagonal, noticing how it both unifies and crosses the image. Then look for the small orange discs and dishes: their warm color and thin lines balance the large silver volumes. Finally, compare the painterly planet with the hard metallic rendering of the station and ask which of the two feels more real.

ContextContexto

According to NASA, this is an illustration of the Space Base concept, produced in-house at the Marshall Space Flight Center. Together with a Phase B study by McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company, it led to a preliminary design in 1969 and 1970. The proposal used two common modules, each 33 feet in diameter and 40 feet long, as the core of a 12-person station and as building blocks for a 50-person base. Joined together, they would form four decks for laboratories, operations, and living quarters, mainly in zero gravity but with an artificial-gravity capability. It was planned for a 242-nautical-mile orbit, with launch in 1977. It was never built as drawn.

Curious detailDato curioso

This station never flew: when it was drawn, its launch was planned for 1977, but the orbital laboratory the United States actually launched first was the much simpler Skylab, in 1973.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What idea of the future does this station convey, and how does it differ from the space stations that were actually built?¿Qué idea del futuro transmite esta estación y en qué se diferencia de las estaciones espaciales que sí se construyeron?
  2. Why might an engineering proposal from 1970 be presented as an expressive painting rather than only as a technical drawing?¿Por qué una propuesta de ingeniería de 1970 se presentaría como una pintura expresiva y no solo como un plano técnico?
  3. If you lived for months inside these modules, what would this exterior view of Earth mean to you?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the painted surface, with that grainy gouache texture where you can still see the brushwork. The station is a framework of silver-gray cylinders crossing diagonally, with a central orange band dotted with cream-colored portholes. I love the contrast between the smooth, reflective shine of the modules and the matte planet below, with its cobalt blues and white clouds. The cropped MSFC-70 code in the corner reminds me this is a working document, not just an image.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me most is the scale and the imagined orbit. The station dominates the foreground in a three-quarter view, with no astronauts, while Earth just curves below as a blue and ochre horizon. I see the two main 33 by 40 foot modules that would form the core for twelve people, the needle-thin booms and those bright orange discs held by dotted lines. Floating against a brownish-black sky, it looks ready to spin someday and create artificial gravity.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant X floating in space! It is all gray and silvery but it has an orange belly with lots of round little windows like eyes. Down below is Earth looking like a blue ball with white clouds and little green spots. At the top it says SPACE BASE in really big white letters. There are tiny orange antennas and skinny sticks sticking out. There are no people, so I imagine I am the one looking through the windows toward Earth.
