What you would seeLo que verías
A detailed color technical illustration of a space station in orbit, viewed from above and set diagonally against the black void of space dotted with faint stars. The main structure is a long horizontal truss boom, about 110 meters long, stretching from corner to corner of the image. At each end, four large rectangular photovoltaic solar arrays unfold, dark with blue and gold reflections from sunlight; the lower arrays catch a bright flare of the sun. At the center of the truss, a cluster of white and silver cylindrical pressurized modules is connected together, with small bluish radiators, antennas, and docking ports visible. White English labels identify each component: U.S. LAB & HABITAT, LOGISTICS MODULE, JAPANESE EXPERIMENT MODULE, EUROPEAN MODULE, CANADIAN MOBILE SERVICING SYSTEM and others connected by thin leader lines. In the lower foreground, the curved limb of Earth shows swirling white clouds over blue oceans with a thin atmospheric glow. A small free-flying module floats detached below to the left, and a tiny space shuttle approaches at the upper right, giving a sense of immense scale. The lighting is crisp and high-contrast, with sharp shadows on metallic surfaces and glossy textures suggesting aluminum and solar cells. Text at lower left reads Space Station Baseline Configuration.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the long truss from end to end to grasp the station’s scale. Then focus on the central cluster of white modules and how they attach to the framework. Finally notice the contrast between the sharp geometry of the solar arrays and the soft, luminous curve of Earth below.
ContextContexto
This is a 1989 illustration from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, held by the NASA Image and Video Library. According to its source description, it responds to President Reagan’s January 25, 1984 directive to develop a permanent crewed Space Station within a decade. NASA adopted a phased approach; this image depicts the baseline configuration with a 110-meter boom, four central pressurized modules and four photovoltaic arrays at the ends providing 75 kW. The modules would include a U.S. laboratory and habitat, laboratories from the European Space Agency and Japan, and a European free-flying pressurized module, with Canada providing the Mobile Servicing System.

Curious detailDato curioso
This baseline design was never built as shown, but it directly foreshadows the International Space Station, whose first element was launched nearly a decade later in 1998 with much of the same international partnership.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I notice this is not a photograph but a color technical illustration from 1989, made to explain a project that did not yet exist. I see the clean line of the truss mast crossing diagonally and the four photovoltaic arrays with blue and golden reflections. The white modules at the center have crisp shadows that suggest metal and aluminum. The labels in English help read each part and at the bottom left you can clearly read Space Station Baseline Configuration against the black of space.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
Through my imaginary telescope I love seeing this station floating above Earth with its clouds and blue atmospheric glow. The 110 meter truss holds at each end the solar arrays that would provide 75 kW of power for the laboratories. At the center I spot the modules from the United States, Japan and Europe, plus the Canadian arm, all working together. I enjoy finding the tiny shuttle approaching at the top right and the free flying module at the bottom left, like pieces of a future that President Reagan in 1984 asked to build within a decade.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant robot in space! It is super long with a metal stick in the middle and four dark wings shining in the sun, like blue mirrors. In the center it has little white houses stuck together where astronauts would live. Below you see the round Earth with clouds and a pretty blue edge. If you look closely there is a tiny shuttle flying in and another little box floating alone. Everything is full of tiny stars and labels that tell you the name of each part.
