What you would seeLo que verías

Seven elderly men sit in a row on tall stools across a dark stage, photographed slightly from the left and from below. In the foreground, lush green ferns partly obscure the bases of the stools and two warm, reddish-brown wooden lecterns, one at each end. All wear suits and ties in gray, black, navy, or brown; their hair is white, gray, or absent, and some wear glasses. The man at far left gestures with both hands as if mid-sentence, while the next man holds a microphone and crosses one leg over the other. The others wait with hands clasped or resting on their knees, gazing in different directions. Behind them, a huge screen shows a lunar landscape, Earth above the horizon, and the word APOLLO beside a large number 4 — presumably the start of “40.” Circular blue Apollo–NASA logos flank the scene, repeating a white letter A, the Moon, and Earth. Stage lighting models their faces and jackets, leaves the upper corners in shadow, and makes the screen glow softly against the black floor and ceiling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two speakers on the left, then let your eye travel toward the quieter figures on the right. Compare their hands and postures: they tell you who is speaking and who is remembering. Finally, read the screen behind them and notice how image of the Moon turns a press conference into a reunion with their past.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this photograph by NASA/Paul E. Alers shows astronauts Walt Cunningham, James Lovell, David Scott, Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke, Thomas Stafford, and Eugene Cernan, from left to right, at NASA Headquarters in Washington during a press conference for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 and the first Moon walk. The catalog gives July 19, 2009, while its own description says Monday, July 20, 2009, so the exact day is uncertain in the record. Apollo 11 had landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. By 2009, these men appeared not as young crews in flight suits, but as elderly witnesses to an era.

Curious detailDato curioso

Apollo 11 landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969; the gathering in this photograph was held four decades later to mark that same date.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when space heroes are seen as elderly men in suits rather than young astronauts in flight gear?¿Qué cambia cuando los héroes espaciales aparecen como hombres mayores de traje y no como jóvenes astronautas con overol de vuelo?
  2. How does the giant image of the Moon behind them shape the way we hear their memories?¿Cómo influye la imagen gigante de la Luna detrás de ellos en la manera de escuchar sus recuerdos?
  3. What should institutions preserve besides photographs: voices, gestures, disagreements, silences?¿Qué debería conservar una institución además de fotografías: voces, gestos, desacuerdos, silencios?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look with a restorer's eyes, you will notice first the stage lighting and how it ages everything visible, the dark suits, the light skin tones and the bright screen in the background, all held in a soft contrast that the photograph preserves with no apparent retouching. The green ferns in the foreground and the reddish wooden lecterns frame the scene and partly hide the bases of the tall stools. I am struck that seven older men occupy a single row with different gestures, and that behind them the lunar image with Earth and the number 4 reminds us this gathering celebrates memory, not mission.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I get excited seeing these seven veterans under that screen showing the Moon and Earth rising over the horizon, just like in the Apollo photos. They are not the young men who flew in 1969, but older witnesses, with white or thinning hair and glasses, gathered in Washington for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11. One gestures with both hands, another holds a microphone, the rest wait. I love that the blue Apollo and NASA logos flank the scene, because they connect science, history and the shared wonder of looking up together.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They are seven grandpas in suits and ties sitting on really tall stools! It makes me laugh that one moves his hands a lot and another holds a microphone on his leg. Down below there are green plants with lots of little leaves covering the stools and two reddish brown wooden stands. In the back there is a giant screen with the Moon, the little Earth and the word APOLLO with a big number 4. It looks like they are telling space stories and everyone watches them because they were there or saw when the rockets reached the Moon.
