What you would seeLo que verías

A wide, slightly distant view shows seven older men seated in a row on tall stools on a black stage, facing an unseen audience. They all wear suits or sport coats, dress shirts and most wear ties, in greys, dark navy, black and one brown tweed-like jacket with beige trousers. Their hair is white or grey, some are balding, and their postures vary: hands folded in laps, arms resting on knees, legs crossed or feet planted. The second man from the right is gesturing with both hands, as if mid-explanation, while the others look toward him or straight ahead. Behind them fills a large dark screen with the word APOLLO above a huge number 40, an image of Earth rising over the grey lunar surface, and on both sides a circular blue Apollo program insignia with a white letter A, stars and planets. In the foreground, lush green ferns in planters interrupt the dark skirt of the stage. To the sides are wooden lecterns, partial flags and mission patches on the left, and a small sign reading APOLLO on the right. Bright spotlights from above right give the scene a formal, press-conference light.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the huge "40" at center, then move to the row of faces beneath it: history is literally written above its protagonists. Compare their postures — six listen, one gestures — and notice the age visible in their hands, suits, and seated rest. Look last at the ferns and low stools, which soften the institutional stage.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this photograph by NASA/Paul E. Alers shows seven Apollo astronauts at a press conference at NASA Headquarters in Washington for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 and the first Moon walk. From left to right, the caption identifies Walt Cunningham, James Lovell, David Scott, Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke, Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan, with missions from Apollo 8 through Apollo 17. Apollo 11 landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969, so the four-decade commemoration took place in July 2009. There is a small inconsistency in the record: the metadata gives July 19, while the caption says Monday, July 20.

Curious detailDato curioso

Apollo 11 landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969; exactly forty years later, some of its contemporaries were commemorating the date not in spacesuits, but in suits and ties before the press.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when heroes of a technological feat return as older men telling the story in words?¿Qué cambia cuando los héroes de una hazaña tecnológica regresan ya mayores a contar la historia con palabras?
  2. How does the giant "40" behind them turn a press conference into an act of memory?¿Cómo convierte el «40» gigante a sus espaldas una conferencia de prensa en un acto de memoria?
  3. Who is missing from this row, and how does that absence shape how we remember Apollo?¿Quiénes faltan en esta fila y cómo influye esa ausencia en la manera de recordar el programa Apolo?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at what time makes visible in this image. I see seven older men in dark suits with white hair, seated on high stools in front of a screen that says APOLLO 40. I notice the contrast between the deep blue of the background, the black stage and the bright green ferns in the foreground. As a conservator I think about how to preserve those colors and the details of the fabrics, the crossed hands and the circular emblems so memory does not fade.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this photo I feel I am in front of living history. There are seven astronauts from the Apollo program seated in a row, those who flew between Apollo 8 and Apollo 17, and behind them you see Earth rising over the Moon with a huge number 40. It excites me that one is gesturing as if telling what it was like to see our planet from up there. It is the anniversary of the first Moon landing on July 20 1969, celebrated in 2009.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like seven grandpas in suits sitting on tall stools! I like that one is moving his hands like he is telling a story and the others are listening. Behind them there is a giant screen that says APOLLO 40 and you can see the little blue Earth rising behind the gray Moon. Below there are green plants that seem to hide the stage. I imagine that if they went to the Moon, they must have the best stories to tell!
