What you would seeLo que verías

Three older men in suits seated on a panel, captured in a medium shot from a slightly low side angle. At center, James Lovell gestures with both hands extended forward, palms facing each other as if measuring or explaining a distance; he wears a gray plaid blazer, light blue shirt and a light patterned tie. His wrinkled face is in profile, mouth slightly open mid-speech, gaze directed off-camera. On the left, Walt Cunningham, also in profile, watches with a serious, contained expression; he wears a dark plaid blazer and a light collared shirt with no visible tie. On the right, David Scott faces the camera with a faint, restrained smile, white hair combed back, dark suit, white shirt and blue tie with a geometric pattern. The background is an out-of-focus projection screen in muted blue-gray tones with large white letters partially visible reading Y E A R S. The lighting is even indoor light without harsh shadows, with sharp texture on skin, fabrics and gray hair. The dark wood edge of a lectern is visible at the bottom foreground. The composition forms a human triangle centered on Lovell’s hand gesture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with Lovell’s hands at the center; his gesture anchors the whole scene. Then compare the three faces: the speaker, the listener in profile, and the one looking toward the camera, and how each expression conveys a different attitude toward remembrance. Notice the blurred Y E A R S in the background, which frames the moment as anniversary and collective memory.

ContextContexto

The image documents the press conference marking the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the first Moon walk, held on July 20, 2009 at NASA Headquarters in Washington, according to NASA Image and Video Library data. Credit is given to NASA / Paul E. Alers. At center is James Lovell (Apollo 8 and Apollo 13), flanked on the left by Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7) and on the right by David Scott (Apollo 9 and Apollo 15). The photograph is institutional press and documentary photography, typical of scientific and space outreach imagery. No further details about the specific remarks are on record, but the broader context is the commemoration of the Apollo program.

Curious detailDato curioso

James Lovell, at center, is one of the few astronauts to fly on two circumlunar missions without landing: Apollo 8, the first to orbit the Moon in 1968, and Apollo 13, the famed 1970 mission that returned safely after an in-flight explosion.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how the even indoor light reveals every texture without creating harsh shadows. I see the wrinkled skin, the white hair and the fabrics of the gray and dark plaid suits with a sharpness that speaks of a well-preserved documentary photograph. The gesture of Lovell’s outstretched hands at the center creates a point of tension that our work seeks to keep intact. Even the wooden lectern in the foreground and the blurred letters in the background in bluish gray tones are part of the material memory we care for so it can keep telling its story.

What excites me here is seeing three witnesses of the Apollo program together at its 2009 commemoration. At the center is James Lovell, of Apollo 8 and 13, making that gesture with his palms facing each other as if measuring the distance to the Moon. Beside him are Walt Cunningham of Apollo 7 and David Scott of Apollo 9 and 15. They are not in spacesuits but in business suits, now older, sharing testimony at NASA headquarters in Washington. That image reminds me that the history of space is also told through words and memory.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are three grandpas in suits and ties sitting close together. The one in the middle moves his hands a lot, as if he is telling something very important and wants to show the size of something huge. The one on the left looks at him very seriously and the one on the right smiles a little at the camera. Behind them there is a big screen with white letters you cannot see completely. I like to imagine they are telling stories about when they went to space and everyone is listening carefully.
