What you would seeLo que verías
On a white background surrounded by a double blue frame, a sheet of vinyl decals presents eleven circular, triangular, and shield-shaped patches arranged in three irregular columns. At the top, capital letters announce the Apollo manned spacecraft series. Each emblem combines lettering, astronauts' surnames, spacecraft, Earth, the Moon, and United States symbols in saturated colors: deep blue, red, golden yellow, orange, and silvery gray, with thick outlines designed to be read from a distance. At upper left, the black Apollo VII patch shows the Americas in yellow over a blue ocean; beside it, the red-and-blue Apollo IX includes a vertical rocket. In the center stands a blue triangle with a red orbit and the names Borman, Lovell, and Anders. Below, a bald eagle descends onto the lunar landscape in Apollo 11, while Apollo XII shows a sailing ship before the Moon and Apollo XIII shows three horses pulling a chariot in front of the Sun. Along the bottom appear a golden lunar-trajectory pin, red and blue geometric forms over craters, a shield with stripes and stars, and the classical profile of Apollo in ochre tones. The surfaces look flat and slightly glossy, like printed stickers, with no real people and no deep shadows.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the names around the edges, then notice that one emblem in the center breaks that pattern. Next, compare how each mission pictures the Moon: as a destination, a landscape, or a symbol. Finally, look for ships, eagles, and horses, and ask how these older images of travel frame a new technology.
ContextContexto
According to NASA/MSFC, the source dated May 1, 1979, this montage brings together the flight crew patches for the crewed Apollo 7 through Apollo 17 missions, presented as permanent vinyl decals. Apollo 7 through 10 were mainly test flights that prepared for the lunar landings, testing the command and service module, rendezvous, docking, and the first crewed flight of the lunar module. Apollo 11 through 17 were lunar landing missions, except for Apollo 13, which circled the Moon without landing after an onboard explosion and returned safely. Apollo 11 landed in the Sea of Tranquility and performed the first lunar surface walk.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Apollo 11 patch is the only one on this sheet that does not list the astronauts' names, a choice visible at a glance: it reads simply “APOLLO 11” above the eagle landing on the Moon.

I focus on the material: these are vinyl decals, flat and slightly glossy, made to be permanent. The white background with a double blue border lets the saturated colors breathe. I notice the possible aging of seventies vinyl, its flat printing with no deep shadows and thick outlines designed to be read from afar. Each circular, triangular or shield-shaped patch keeps the original shine of deep blue, red and gold. The set is fragile due to its adhesive, but stable if protected from light and humidity.

What excites me most is reading the orbital history in these eleven emblems. I see Earth and the Moon repeated as destinations, the red orbit on the central triangle and the vertical rocket on Apollo IX. This sheet sums up Apollo 7 to 17: the test flights that rehearsed dockings and the lunar module, and then the landings toward the Sea of Tranquility, except for Apollo 13 which only looped around the Moon after the explosion and returned. Each symbol is a shorthand map of a real trajectory.

It looks like a sticker sheet for my notebook! There are eleven patches with different shapes, some round and one shaped like a blue triangle. I like the eagle coming down to the Moon and the three little horses pulling a cart in front of the Sun, plus the little sailboat. Everything has very bright colors like blue, red and golden yellow, with thick borders. At the top it says the name of the Apollo ships and at the bottom there is a man in profile in ochre tones. Can I count them all again?
