What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a high, slightly oblique overhead view of a circular, metallic aircraft known as the Avrocar, centered in a vast indoor test facility. In the foreground, the highly reflective silver disc dominates the frame, about six meters across, its aluminum skin marked by rivets, panel lines, and subtle soot or wear. At its heart is a large central duct containing a dark radial fan with a polished cone, surrounded by instrumentation and several smaller round ports evenly spaced across the hull. Stenciled lettering reads U.S. AIR FORCE, U.S. ARMY, and AV-7055, alongside a U.S. roundel with star and bars. The outer rim catches light, showing minor dents and a thin dark line suggesting a cable. The background is the ribbed metal floor of the 40x80-foot wind tunnel at Ames Research Center, painted with white alphanumeric markers and scattered with wooden planks. Around the craft stand studio lights on red tripods, open cardboard boxes, and power cables, their warm artificial glow creating soft highlights and shadows across the hangar floor and the aircraft’s surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large central fan and let your eye move outward to the stenciled military markings and small vents. Observe how hangar lights reflect on the polished metal to convey the tunnel’s immense scale. Look for signs of wear and the contrast between the futuristic saucer shape and the gritty industrial setting.

ContextContexto

The photograph, dated March 29, 1960 and credited to NASA / Ames Research Center (ARC), documents testing of the Avrocar, an experimental vertical take-off aircraft developed by Avro Canada with funding from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. It was taken from above inside the 40-by-80-foot wind tunnel at Moffett Field, California, one of the largest wind tunnels in the world, used to assess lift and stability. The source description notes the vehicle is shown without additional fairing and mounted on variable-height struts. The specific outcome of this test is not recorded, but the Avrocar program was cancelled in the early 1960s due to control and performance issues.

Curious detailDato curioso

The 40x80-foot wind tunnel at Ames, whose corrugated floor is visible here, was large enough to test full-scale aircraft and remains part of the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex today.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does this saucer shape tell you about how the future was imagined in 1960?¿Qué te hace pensar esta forma de platillo volador sobre cómo se imaginaba el futuro en 1960?
  2. How does seeing the craft in a laboratory setting rather than in flight change its meaning?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del objeto al verlo en un entorno de laboratorio y no volando?
  3. What traces of testing and wear reveal that this was an experimental prototype rather than an operational aircraft?¿Qué detalles de desgaste o de prueba sugieren que es un prototipo experimental y no un avión operativo?

This metal disc of about six meters fascinates me for its surface. I see polished aluminum with visible rivets, soot stains and wear that tell the story of each test. At the center is the large circular intake with its dark fan and silver cone, surrounded by small symmetrical holes. The inscriptions U.S. AIR FORCE and U.S. ARMY with the number AV-7055 remain legible on the reflective metal. I wonder how to stabilize that structure and protect it from intense glare without erasing its history of experimentation.

Las inscripciones U.S. AIR FORCE y U.S.

Seen from above I think of a flying saucer, and I understand why it fascinated people during the Cold War. This is the Avrocar, a VTOL prototype tested on March 29, 1960 in the huge 40x80 foot wind tunnel at Ames in Moffett Field. That circular shape aimed for vertical takeoff using the central fan. From my perspective, it is the human attempt to defy gravity, like exploring space but without leaving the atmosphere, mounted on variable height supports to measure lift.

It looks like a movie flying saucer! It is huge, round and silvery like an enormous coin, six meters wide. In the middle it has a big dark fan that looks like a monster mouth. It has little letters that say U.S. AIR FORCE and numbers AV-7055, and a little star painted on it. It is in a very big metal room with red lights on tripods. I think if you turn on the fan it goes whoooosh and flies away like a shiny spinning top.
