What you would seeLo que verías

Large-format black-and-white photograph taken inside a monumental industrial hangar. At the center, a twin-engine Douglas A-26B Invader bomber hangs horizontally in mid-air, suspended by cables from an overhead traveling crane, seen in three-quarter view from the front right. The elongated metal fuselage, two engine nacelles with propellers removed, partially extended landing gear, glazed cockpit, and the U.S. roundel insignia on the left wing are clearly visible. Below the aircraft a huge rectangular wind-tunnel opening stretches across the floor, with curved concrete edges and metal rails. In the foreground are concrete stairways and railings. The background and midground are dominated by the building structure: steel lattice beams, roof trusses, tall clerestory windows admitting soft diffuse daylight, and the crane gantry with its hook and pulleys. Three or four technicians in work clothes stand on the platform around the pit, their small figures revealing the colossal scale of both aircraft and hall. Lighting is contrasty, with bright highlights on polished metal and deep shadows under the wings. The texture shows analog film grain and an inscription in the lower left corner: ‘NACA A-7690 5-9-45’. The scene conveys engineering precision and a moment of expectant suspension.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the silvery volume of the suspended airplane, then drop your gaze to the empty tunnel pit waiting below. Notice the scale relationship between the tiny people and the massive metal machine. Observe how light from the side windows models the surfaces and reveals the steel lattice of the hangar.

ContextContexto

The image was taken on May 9, 1945, by NACA, the predecessor of NASA, at its Ames Research Center in California. It shows the installation of a Douglas A-26B Invader — a light bomber and attack aircraft used at the end of World War II — inside the 40x80-foot wind tunnel, one of the largest in the world at the time. According to the source description, the airplane is being centered over the tunnel opening for aerodynamic testing. Such tests allowed engineers to study lift, drag and stability at full scale. The names of the visible technicians are not recorded. The photograph is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and documents American scientific infrastructure in the 1940s.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Ames 40x80-foot wind tunnel, opened in 1944, was so large it could test full-size aircraft instead of models, and it remains in operation today as part of NASA Ames Research Center.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the grain of the analog negative and the inscription NACA A-7690 5-9-45 in the corner. It is a large-format black and white print that preserves highlights on the polished metal and deep shadows under the wings. I notice the contrast between the smooth fuselage surface and the rough texture of the concrete, the railings and the lattice of steel beams. The airplane hangs held by cables, in a fragile balance that shows the care taken to preserve it before testing.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this image is about measuring the invisible. That twin-engine Douglas A-26B is suspended over the rectangular mouth of the 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel at Ames, California, on May 9, 1945. Without propellers, with landing gear half retracted, it awaits study of lift and drag at full scale. I am fascinated by the colossal scale of the hangar, the overhead crane and those three or four tiny human figures that look minuscule. It is science in World War II times, trying to make the air speak.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the airplane is floating like a giant toy. It is hanging from super thin cables and below there is a huge dark hole! I imagine it will fall but no, a giant crane is holding it. The people standing nearby look so tiny, like little ants next to the plane. The whole place is huge, with lots of windows and iron beams on the roof. It feels a little scary and very exciting at the same time.
