What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal black-and-white photograph of an enormous, almost empty industrial interior. In the foreground, below, a dark surface of concrete or metal takes up nearly the lower half: pale stains, scratches, faint rectangular marks, and small reflections suggest heavy use. Toward the center stretches a medium-toned circular rotating platform, with a shiny tubular metal edge along its front. To the left, a wide ramp of light panels, slightly inclined, leads up to that platform; on it rests a low, dark rectangular block, the model's generic building. Further back rises a thin, vertical mast held by fine tensioned cables that form triangles in the air. To the right appears the white model of the 80x120 tunnel: one end with a dense vertical grille, and a low, elongated body with small black windows or patches, diamond shapes, and thick cables that hang down and coil on the floor. The background is a gigantic curved wall lost in shadow, with two lighter inclined bands. At upper left, three rows of rectangular windows or skylights reveal luminous strips and distant structures. Harsh light creates strong contrasts, almost blown-out whites against deep blacks, with no people in view, heightening the disconcerting scale between the model and the real facility.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark floor in the foreground and follow the light-colored ramp until you reach the small dark block and the thin mast. Then look right, toward the white gridded inlet: that is where the scale model begins. Finally, look up at the curved wall and the high openings to sense the real tunnel that contains it.

ContextContexto

According to NASA Image and Video Library, with credit to NASA/ARC and authorship attributed to Clayton and Carnahan, this is a 1/50 scale model of the 80x120-foot wind tunnel of the NFAC, placed inside the test section of the 40x80-foot wind tunnel. The model, seen from the west, sits on a rotating ground board designed for this test; a ramp leads up to it and a generic building stands in front of the 80x120 inlet. The source gives June 27, 1996, but its own description is dated March 12, 1976; probably one date refers to the later record or digitization, though this is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso

A wind tunnel was tested by putting a 1/50 scale model of another, larger wind tunnel inside it: a tunnel within a tunnel, complete with a tiny generic building in front of its inlet.

Look how black and white both tricks us and reveals everything. This photo by Clayton and Carnahan for NASA/ARC shows a 1/50 scale model of the 80x120 foot tunnel placed inside the real 40x80 foot tunnel. I focus on the stains and scratches on the dark floor and on the shiny tubular edge of the turntable platform. The white model looks pristine, but the coiled cables on the ground and the black patches betray testing and wear. It is fascinating to see how something tiny helps us care for something gigantic.

This image makes me think about scales in the universe. Here we see a tunnel inside another tunnel, a 1/50 scale model of the NFAC 80x120 foot tunnel placed in the test section of the 40x80 foot tunnel, seen from the west according to the record. The circular turntable platform and the pale ramp leading to the dark rectangular block in front of the entrance remind me of a launch pad. The mast with taut cables looks like an antenna. I wonder how they tested airflow here just as we test crater models to understand something enormous.

It looks like a dollhouse for giants! The photo is in black and white and everything looks huge and empty. Down below there is a dark floor with spots and little scratches. In the middle there is a big spinning circle with a shiny edge and a ramp going up like a slide. On the right there is the white model with a big little grill and black little windows. Up top there is a skinny stick with strings holding it. There are no people so everything looks even more gigantic. Can you imagine playing in there?
